Oil Boiler Replacement Devon: A Heat Pump Designed Room by Room for Your Home
Oil boiler replacement in Devon, with a heat pump sized room by room for your house. The £9,000 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for eligible oil and LPG homes comes off the invoice before you pay.
James and the team provided a first rate end to end service, our old oil boiler failed on Good Friday and within 3/4 weeks we were up and running with a new energy efficient air source heating system.

What is included
What your oil boiler replacement includes
Every quote starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey. Wall construction, glazing and room use get recorded individually, and that survey sets the kilowatt figure, the radiator schedule and the flow temperature before anything gets ordered.
James isn’t tied to one manufacturer, so the unit is the one that suits the house, often an Ideal, sized between 4 and 10 kilowatts for most oil-heated homes in this area and usually paired with a pre-plumbed cylinder that arrives with its filter, diverter valve and overheat cut-out already fitted.
That cylinder is the detail that keeps a subcontractor install fast and reliable, and it’s why James reaches for one on most jobs.
Because Eco Pro is an MCS-certified installation company, we apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant on your behalf.

Off-grid Devon homes
Oil boiler replacement Devon: is your off-grid home a good fit?
The South West has the highest share of off-gas-grid households of any English region, around 24% against a GB average of 16%, roughly one and a half times the national rate, and East Devon’s rural villages carry a large share of that oil and LPG heating stock.
This page is written for that household: an oil or LPG boiler, off the mains gas network.
Most of the properties James designs for are 1960s to 1990s detached houses and bungalows, or older stone, cob and period rural buildings, typically EPC D or E, with loft insulation done and solid walls left untreated.
James designs the heat pump system to match that condition.
A heat loss survey measures what the walls, windows and rooms actually lose, and the flow temperature gets designed around that number, usually landing around 45 to 50 degrees.
A second opinion from someone who audits installers
James also works as a freelance NAPIT MCS assessor, auditing other installers’ finished jobs against the national standard. He knows exactly what an oversized or badly commissioned heat pump looks like, because checking for it is part of his other job.
If your oil tank sits within reach of your driveway and you’ve already had one installer say your house “isn’t suitable,” get a second opinion from someone who audits installers for a living.
What a NAPIT assessor looks for
Sized from the heat loss
The unit’s output gets checked against a room-by-room heat loss calculation. A unit picked from the floor area alone fails that check.
Flow temperature and radiators
The design flow temperature has to suit the radiators in every room. Where it doesn’t, the system runs hotter than it should and costs more to run.
Where the unit sits, and its sound
The outdoor unit needs a sound calculation for its exact spot, measured against the nearest neighbour’s window.
Commissioning records
A finished job needs its commissioning figures written down and its MCS certificate issued. The grant claim depends on that certificate.
Nesta’s research on oil-heated homes switching under the £9,000 grant put the saving for a medium-sized home at over £650 a year, based on the energy price cap and oil prices at the time of that research.
It is not a guaranteed figure: it will narrow if oil gets cheaper, and your own number depends on your tariff, your home’s heat loss and how you use hot water.
This page prints no spot price for oil or electricity, because both change within weeks and a printed figure would be wrong by the time you read it.
Three jobs leave your winter for good: checking the tank gauge before a cold snap, calling round for the best delivery price, and running dry in January.
NovDecJanFebMar

On a heat pump
A heat pump on a dedicated tariff, paired with a well-insulated cylinder, gives you a flatter and more predictable bill even where the headline saving against oil is modest.

Friendly, professional heat pump installation. It was a challenge, plumbing-wise and electrically, as the house is circa 1750, Eco Pro worked through and successfully completed a neat, functional system.
Owner's reply Thanks so much, Phil! A house from around 1750 kept us on our toes with the pipework and the wiring, so good to hear the finished system looks neat and does its job. Old places like yours are worth the extra thought 😊

James and his team were excellent from start to finish. We wanted to replace our oil fired boiler with an Air Source Heat Pump. Other firms were very inflexible with location of the pump and associated equipment. James took time to understand our preferences and made it happen even in very tight spaces. Great to find a reliable and professional local Devon business. Thanks
Owner's reply Thanks so much, Paul! Where the heat pump and the rest of the kit end up is your call, so it was worth the extra head-scratching to make it work in those tight spots. Enjoy life without the oil boiler 😊

For our new house we were considering an Air Source Heat Pump and James did a great job of not only quoting for us to source all the materials and install the system but also educating us on the benefits and considerations of getting a heat pump compared to keeping a gas system and replacing our existing boiler.
No pressure to go either way but an honest assessment of what we should consider. We have an old house and we’re considering certain insulation upgrades as part of our renovation, which James was very patient in considering (and amending) with our heat pump plans, specs and what that meant for our radiator and underfloor heating requirements.
Overall, James has been thoroughly supportive, helpful, professional and patient in all conversations and dealings with us - including grant process and working closely with our builders on scheduling of the works. I could recommend James’ services enough and would choose him again for any future works. We got solar panels at the same time but through another firm and now understand James is looking to offer this service - I wish we had been able to engage James to do those works for us then too!
Owner's reply Thanks so much, Aletta! With the insulation upgrades changing what the house needed, it was worth reworking the specs and radiators a few times to get it right. Really glad the grant side and fitting around your builders went smoothly too 😊

We were doing a huge amount of work to our new house and an Air Source Heat Pump was something we wanted to consider to move away from gas - due to cost and the unstable prices.
We spoke to a number of providers and all made me very nervous about costs and work involved…our house was older and would need some changes to radiators etc, and some said I would need to reinstate the whole roof!?..….
Wasn’t feeling very positive.
EcoPro totally changed my feelings - they assessed the heat loss, explained all the things in detail and had a conversation about options and what we could change, what we could do to save some money or could we take a different approach…. It was a totally joint discussion to get the right solution which filled me with confidence….and they had all the answers. Not once was I told something was too difficult or timely!
I’ve since not really had to get involved with anything and it’s all just happened around me! Few decisions here and there but they’ve just taken care of it all.
Systems works great and I’m really pleased!

Can’t recommend Eco Pro enough. We’d been putting off replacing our old oil boiler for ages because we didn’t really understand what the alternatives were, but James took the time to sit down and explain it all properly, no pressure, just honest advice about what would actually work for our house near Crediton, Devon. You could tell he genuinely knew his stuff and wasn’t just trying to sell us the most expensive option. The heat pump install itself was spot on the lads were great and James followed up afterwards to make sure everything was running properly and set us up on an app to control everything. All certificates for warrenty etc came in a well organised “handover pack”. Super impressed !If you’re on the fence about switching to a heat pump, just give James a call you won’t regret it
Owner's reply Thanks so much, Conor! Honest advice with no pressure is exactly how we try to do things, so really glad it helped you make the switch from oil at your place near Crediton. Enjoy having everything on the app 😊

It’s great to have a company like this in Exeter. We recommend them to all our friends and family.

We were looking to replace our ageing gas heating system with something more efficient, and after speaking with James, we knew we’d found the right company. He took the time to understand our home, explained everything clearly, and recommended the right air source heat pump without any pressure.
From the very beginning, we were impressed by the detailed heat loss survey, It gave us confidence that the system was being designed specifically for our home in West Hill, Ottery St. Mary.
The installation team were professional, friendly, and tidy, and completed the work to an exceptionally high standard.
We’d happily recommend Eco Pro to anyone considering an air source heat pump. The whole experience was great, professional, and exceeded our expectations
Owner's reply Hi Gobu, thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a great and detailed review.
We really appreciate your recommendation, and we’re looking forward to installing an air source heat pump at one of your rental properties in Kilmington, Axminster this August.

Costs and the grant
The £9,000 grant and 0% VAT for oil and LPG homes
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 towards an air source heat pump for most eligible homes in England and Wales. Off-gas-grid households heating with oil or LPG get an extra £1,500 on top, £9,000 in total, available now and running until 31 March 2027. James applies for it and deducts it from your invoice before you pay anything.

Most other eligible homes£7,500 instead of £9,000

Claimed for you by an MCS installer
Eligibility depends on the property and your circumstances, so not every home qualifies. We confirm yours at the free home assessment before anything is promised. For the full mechanics of how the grant is assessed and claimed, see the £9,000 oil and LPG grant.
Installations also qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then move to the reduced rate of 5%.
And since 28 April 2026, a valid EPC is no longer a strict requirement to apply: where you don’t have one, Eco Pro can support the application with a recent fuel bill or oil receipt and photographs of your existing system.
Most eligible homes£7,500For most eligible homes.
Off-gas-grid oil and LPG£9,000For off-gas-grid households heating with oil or LPG, available now until 31 March 2027.
0% VATOn qualifying installations until 31 March 2027, then the reduced rate of 5%.
The room-by-room heat loss survey is also the answer to the most common real failure mode in this industry: an oversized heat pump that short-cycles and never settles into an efficient rhythm. The single biggest reason a heat pump ends up costing more to run than it should is a unit sized on a guess.
Sized to the measured house
Most oil-heated homes in East Devon land in the 4 to 10 kilowatt range once they’re properly measured, and the heat pump is picked to match that number and the house around it.
Pre-plumbed cylinder
James pairs it with a pre-plumbed cylinder for the same reason a subcontractor team can commission it reliably in a day: the filter, diverter valve and overheat stat are already fitted at the factory, so less can go wrong on site.
Controls set at commissioning
Weather-compensating controls go in where they help, and James sets them up when he commissions the system.
Not tied to one make
Each house gets the heat pump and cylinder that suit it, from whichever maker builds the right one.

Street, Somerset: three opinions, one 16kW mistake, and the design that settled it
Exmouth
A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across East Devon, including Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton.
Featured case study
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
By the time the owner of this oil-heated Somerset property called Eco Pro, they had already sat through visits from three heating companies, two of them national names, and come away with contradictory advice. One installer proposed a 16 kilowatt heat pump. Another said the house couldn’t take a heat pump at all. James’s room-by-room heat loss survey settled it: the property was a good fit, and the real heat demand sat well under 16 kilowatts.
James replaced the oil boiler with an Ideal Logic Air, picked for this property and sized to that survey, and applied the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant of £7,500, the rate in force when the job ran, direct off the invoice.
Oil boiler replacement Devon: questions before you book
It depends on your property’s size, radiators and hot water setup. Every enquiry starts with a free home assessment, and the heat loss survey sets the final figure. For typical ranges, see air source heat pump cost in Devon.
Yes, once it’s sized to your actual house. The room-by-room heat loss survey sets the unit size and flow temperature so the system is built for your specific rooms.
Your old oil boiler is removed as part of the installation, and a heat pump and hot water cylinder go in. Where the new kit sits is agreed with you at the free home assessment.
Often, but the honest answer depends on your tariff and your home. Nesta’s research put the saving for a medium-sized oil-heated home at over £650 a year, based on the energy price cap and oil prices at the time of that research, and that figure narrows if oil gets cheaper. Nobody can promise you an exact saving. See the month-by-month breakdown of how heat pump running costs compare with oil.
Yes. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 for most homes, and £9,000 for off-gas-grid oil and LPG households, available now until 31 March 2027. Eco Pro handles the claim on your behalf and takes it off your bill.
Sometimes. A heat pump runs a gentler flow temperature than an oil boiler, so a handful of radiators in an older property may need upsizing. The heat loss survey names them room by room.
There’s no ban on running an existing oil boiler. What’s changed is the incentive to switch: the £9,000 grant for oil and LPG homes and 0% VAT on installation both run until 31 March 2027, which is why this is a good window to book your free home assessment.
About a week on site, usually starting Monday and commissioned Thursday or Friday. Eco Pro caps it at one or two jobs running at once, so the team that starts your job finishes it.
James walks your property, looks at your current oil system, and tells you plainly whether it’s a good fit. Our contact page has other ways to reach us.

Excellent service for our ground source heat pumps. They always respond if a problem arises or for the annual check over.
Owner's reply Thanks, John! Really glad the annual check overs and quick responses have kept your ground source system running well, that ongoing aftercare is a big part of what we do 😊

Honestly the best company to work with. Great communication throughout from James, and nothing ever felt like too much trouble. Attention to detail was 10/10.
We love our air source heat pump! At first, we didn’t have anywhere suitable for it at the back of the house, so we agreed to have it at the front but it looks so neat and we’re really happy with everything. It’s super efficient and almost silent too.
It’s great to have a company like this in Exeter. We recommend them to all our friends and family.
Owner's reply Thanks so much, Jade! Really pleased it's running so quietly and efficiently for you. And thanks for recommending us around Exeter, that genuinely means a lot 😊

See you soon! 😊

James and the team provided a first rate end to end service, our old oil boiler failed on Good Friday and within 3/4 weeks we were up and running with a new energy efficient air source heating system. Totally recommend Eco Pro Renewables Ltd to anyone who asks 😍
Owner's reply Thank you for your kind review, Richard! 😊
We’re delighted we could get you up and running quickly with your new air source heat pump system. Your recommendation is greatly appreciated by the whole team.

We had an excellent 10/10 experience with James and would highly recommend him.
He went above and beyond to help update the heating system in our current housing project. Communication was outstanding throughout, he responded quickly and always provided clear explanations whenever we had questions.
James also supported us in organising additional tradespeople whenever needed, making the whole process smooth and stress-free.
The house is finally warm, comfortable, and looking much more modern.
Thank you, James 😊
P.s We'll give you a break now before the next project 😛
Owner's reply Ah that’s great to hear! Thanks so much for the kind words!
I’m really glad we got everything sorted for you. Hearing that makes it all worth it 🙌
You know where I am when the next project starts 😄
Thanks again 😊

Excellent – 10/10! A great company to work with. Communication was excellent throughout, with quick responses and clear explanations whenever we had questions.
The heat pump is almost silent, which was something we were worried about, and the results have been fantastic. We’re lovely and warm and always have plenty of hot water. Great work 👍
Owner's reply Thank you, Grace! Great to hear you’re happy with the results and that everything is running smoothly. We really appreciate your kind words and recommendation!

We were very pleased with the installation of our 22 kW heat pump.
Despite parts of the farmhouse being 13th century the system is performing extremely well and keeps the house constantly warm throughout. The installation was carried out professionally with great attention to detail and a high standard of workmanship.
The same company have also installed heat pump systems across our rental properties, All completed efficiently and to an excellent standard.
We are very happy with the service and would highly recommend this company.
Owner's reply Thanks, Barbara! It’s been a pleasure working with you, and we really appreciate your recommendation.

James Stalker is the most reliable man I know. He always arrives on time with a smile on his face. His work for us over a period of 8 or so years has been exemplary — his recommendations have all been positive and have worked in our favour.
I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him to work on your behalf.
Many thanks — Stephen Moore — Hampshire
Owner's reply Thank you for the kind words, Steve! We really appreciate your support and recommendation.
