Heat Pump Installation Torquay: Older Villas, Measured Room By Room
Three in four Torbay properties sit below EPC band C, and since April 2026 that rating no longer decides a grant application. Heat pump installation Torquay starts from a room-by-room survey instead.
The heat pump is almost silent, which was something we were worried about, and the results have been fantastic. We’re lovely and warm and always have plenty of hot water.

What your Torquay installation includes
A heat pump chosen in an afternoon is one its owner lives with for years. Every Torquay installation we quote covers:
- The heat loss survey and design. Wall build-up, glazing and how each room gets used, recorded one room at a time into a kilowatt figure for your address.
- The heat pump and its cylinder. Whichever outdoor unit suits the house, and a heat-pump cylinder indoors, sized on how much hot water the household actually draws.
- Radiator changes only where the numbers ask. A tall villa room may want a bigger emitter; a 1970s bungalow often wants none at all.
- Pipework, electrics and the base. Where the outdoor unit stands is settled by the MCS sound calculation before anything is ordered.
- Commissioning and optimisation. Flow temperature set to the design figure, not to a factory default.
- The grant application. We file it and take it off the price before an invoice reaches you.
- Handover and aftercare. The controls explained on the day, then a number that still reaches us at the first service.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope, and it works well at the low flow temperatures these systems prefer.
Air source heat pump installation Torquay: what a tall Victorian room really loses
The large Victorian villas around Wellswood and the Lincombes lose heat the way tall rooms always do: high ceilings, big windows and a stairwell that takes warm air straight up to the top floor.
- A floor plan shows none of that, least of all in a wet February.
Torbay’s own housing evidence puts 75% of homes below EPC band C, against 54% across England.
- Since April 2026 an EPC no longer decides a Boiler Upgrade Scheme application, so the band describes the fabric rather than closing the door on it.
Our base is on Exeter Road in Exmouth: MCS certified, air-to-water and nothing else, with James on heat pumps since 2010 and past 100 installations behind that.
- The order the work runs in is on our page for an air source heat pump installation.
Why Torquay homeowners choose us
The heat pump installer Torquay homes need is the one who measured the place before pricing it. That means a heat pump company Torquay owners ring directly and reach the person who designed the system.
The owner runs your job.
- James assesses the property and draws the design, an install team we book regularly does the fitting, and he commissions and hands the system over.
- Aftercare stays with him, and no call centre takes your call first. His training is on our about page.

- Tall Wellswood and Lincombes villas lose heat up the stairwell to the top floor, and his design counts that loss room by room.
We size from measurement, not floor area.
- Every room is recorded before a kilowatt is named, Chelston semi or Warberries villa alike.
Older and period properties welcome.
- Solid walls and high ceilings are a design question, which our guide to heat pumps in old houses goes through.

- We lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim ourselves and subtract it before you are invoiced.
- Installation takes about a week, a Monday start and commissioning on the Thursday or Friday, with aftercare roughly forty-five minutes down the coast. Heat pump installation Teignmouth is the same job a few miles up the coast. Brixham’s harbour cottages date from the 19th century or earlier, and Higher Brixham is mostly 1930s to 1970s housing, both covered on our Brixham heat pump page.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme Torquay: grants and costs for your home
We are MCS certified, so we apply and deduct the grant from your quote, which means you never pay it and claim it back.
Check if your home qualifiesEligibility depends on the property and your circumstances, so not every Torquay home qualifies.
We confirm yours at the free home assessment before anything is promised.
- On running costs we are straight: the saving on a standard tariff is usually modest.
- Cost follows the house, not a price list: see our air source heat pump cost guide.
Grant figures correct as of September 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
The scheme pays towards an air-to-water heat pump replacing a fossil fuel system.
- Detail sits in our Boiler Upgrade Scheme guide for Devon.
- Off the gas grid on oil or LPG the grant can be £9,000, on applications lodged by 31 March 2027, and £7,500 for other eligible homes, including mains gas.
- 0% VAT on the installation runs to that date as well.
The kit we fit in Torquay, and why
For the typical off-grid home the measured heat loss gives the size of unit, and the room figures show which radiators can stay as they are.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
The air source heat pump Torquay homes get from us isn’t locked to one maker: Ideal turns up on plenty of our jobs, yet each property gets the unit its heat loss calls for, most often beside a cylinder that arrives already plumbed, filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out fitted.
4 to 10 kilowatts covers most properties we design for. Ideal units are made in the UK, so spares move fast when a Warberries villa wants a part in February, which is what keeps an installation predictable and a repair short.

A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across Devon, including Torquay, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton. Round the bay in Paignton, oil heats about one home in a thousand, so the choice there is usually a heat pump or a new gas boiler, which a heat pump for a Paignton gas home weighs up.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
What Torquay callers ask before they book
It follows your Torquay property, its radiators and its hot water demand, which is why we open with a free home assessment and a fixed estimate rather than a price list.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme is the heat pump grant Torquay owners ask us about. A home off the gas grid on oil or LPG can qualify for £9,000, on applications lodged by 31 March 2027, and £7,500 for other eligible homes, including mains gas.
Book my free home assessmentUsually yes. The heat pumps Torquay properties of that age take are sized from the room-by-room heat loss survey, so tall rooms and solid walls change the design, not the answer, and a low EPC band is common across Torbay rather than a reason to be turned away.
Book my free home assessmentIt can. Sixteen of Torbay’s conservation areas are in Torquay, so we flag the constraint at the free home assessment, settle the position against the MCS sound calculation, and tell you what to check with Torbay Council.
Book my free home assessmentSometimes. A heat pump runs cooler than a boiler, so a few radiators in an older Torquay property may need to grow. The heat loss survey names which ones, room by room.
