Heat Pump Installation Kenton: From Fire-Rebuild Cottages to New Estates
Since the 1856 fire, Kenton has rebuilt in brick up to Powderham Castle’s gates, and newer estates further out mix mains gas with off-grid fuel. Heat pump installation in Kenton starts with a full heat loss survey, whatever the house is.
Excellent service throughout would recommend Eco pro renewables. Very competitive prices and excellent communication. 10/10

Everything a Kenton installation includes, itemised
A heat pump that disappoints its owner is nearly always one specified without measuring first. A fire-rebuild cottage and a Penhayes semi from the eighties get the same process and the same seven things you are paying for.
- The heat loss survey and the design it produces. Wall construction, glazing, floor build-up and how each room is actually used, recorded one room at a time, so the kilowatt figure belongs to your address and nobody else’s.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. An outdoor unit selected for the house in question, a heat-pump-specific hot water cylinder inside, sized against the bathrooms the household actually runs rather than a catalogue default.
- Radiator changes where the numbers call for them. On a solid Victorian wall that can mean two or three larger emitters; on a 1980s cavity semi off Lumley Close, often none at all. The schedule reaches you in writing first.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. Getting flow and return from a modern outdoor unit into a house with Victorian plumbing, or a 1960s stud wall, is worked out on the survey visit. Electrics normally take a day, and the unit sits on a prepared base positioned by the MCS sound calculation.
- Commissioning and optimisation. The flow temperature is set from the design calculation, weather compensation switched on, and the hot water schedule agreed with you before we leave.
- The grant application. Filing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim is our job, and the award is netted off the invoice before it is raised, not chased back afterwards.
- Handover and aftercare. A plain-English run through the controls, then the same number to ring when the first service comes round.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope: already down in a Kenton kitchen extension, or going in alongside the rest of the work. It runs happily at the lower flow temperatures a heat pump uses, which is more than some radiators can say.
Air source heat pump installation Kenton: two different builds, one design method
Kenton’s centre burned through the afternoon of 16 April 1856, twenty-four houses lost in one fire.
- Lord Courtenay, later the 11th Earl of Devon, had the replacement cottages built in brick, each with its own privy plumbed into a proper sewer, a genuine step up for farm labourers’ housing at the time. Those solid walls behave nothing like what went up a century later. East Town arrived in the 1960s on former orchards and allotments, Penhayes followed in the 1980s, and Castle Gate and Lumley Close came after that, on cavity construction throughout.
- Two different heat loss sums, inside one small village.
Devon has roughly 41,000 households heating on oil, but Kenton bucks that pattern: mains gas reaches the fire-rebuild streets and follows the estates straight through to Lumley Close.
- A minority of properties on the outer edges are off the grid, burning oil or LPG.
- For those households, oil boiler replacement is routine work for us, and the village’s older properties get the same room-by-room sizing as the newer estates. Seven miles back up the same road we also cover heat pump installation Exeter.
We are the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist on Exeter Road in Exmouth, and James Stalker, the owner, runs every assessment himself: on heat pumps since 2010, past 100 installations.
- Sizing comes off a room-by-room heat loss survey, never a floor-area guess.

Five things that separate us on a Kenton job
A heat pump installer Kenton households can still reach two winters on beats the lowest quote, on a fire-rebuild cottage or a Lumley Close semi. Five reasons homeowners choose to deal with us directly.
The owner runs your job.
- From the first visit James assesses and designs, then sees the fit, commissioning and handover through, and he keeps the aftercare.
- Ring later and the man answering designed your system. The about page introduces him.

Your designer inspects everybody else’s work too.
- NAPIT contracts James as a freelance MCS assessor, so part of his month goes on judging other installers’ heat pumps against the standard.
- Oversizing is not a theory to him.
Sizing comes from measurement.
- Every room, wall type and window recorded before a kilowatt is specified, whichever era the Kenton property was built in.
Older and awkward homes are welcome.
- A fire-rebuild cottage with solid brick walls and no cavity to work with gets the same attention as a modern semi.
- We do not walk away because a house is hard to measure. If your Kenton home has already been called unsuitable, that verdict is usually a design shortcut, not a fact about your house.
The grant handled, about a week on site.
- Where a Kenton property qualifies, we lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application ourselves and take the amount off the price before you are invoiced. It is never yours to find and claim back.
- Two jobs run at once, our limit, and Kenton is a short run from Exmouth for a call-back or a service. The rest of our patch is on our areas we cover page.

Heat pump installation Kenton, costs and the grant that comes off first
Being MCS certified lets us file the grant application and take the grant off your invoice at the outset, rather than leaving you to fund it and reclaim it later. Which of the two figures your own Kenton property qualifies for is something the free home assessment settles, on the house in front of us, not a postcode guess.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs we give it to you straight.
You will not hear a percentage or a promised annual saving from us: what you save depends on your tariff, your building fabric and the fuel coming out.
- For a Kenton household still on oil, there is a practical bonus too: no delivery to schedule, no tank to check in January.
- More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, an eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales replacing a fossil fuel system can claim £7,500 towards an air-to-water heat pump, and that is the figure most Kenton addresses can qualify for.
- Not every property qualifies, and your circumstances matter as much as the building.
- Where a property has no mains gas connection and burns oil or LPG, a minority case, it can qualify for the £9,000 heat pump grant, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027.
- VAT on qualifying work sits at 0% through to 31 March 2027.
Choosing the right heat pump for Kenton’s housing
Four to ten kilowatts covers most Kenton homes, core and estates alike.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
Kenton properties, fire-rebuild streets to new estates, get the heat pump and cylinder each one needs, because we are not tied to one manufacturer the way a bigger firm on one or two makes is.
We fit plenty of Ideal units, built in the UK so parts arrive quickly, and the cylinder we normally fit turns up with its filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out fitted and wired at the factory. In a fire-rebuild cottage where the airing cupboard was built into a Victorian brick chase, or a Penhayes semi with a compact utility cupboard, lifting in a finished cylinder saves the best part of a day and removes a fistful of joints that could ever weep.
None of that is loyalty to a badge. Where a Kenton property genuinely calls for something else, the heat loss survey shows it, and the design follows the building rather than the catalogue.

The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.

The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.

A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across East Devon and Teignbridge, including Kenton, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill, Honiton and neighbouring Starcross. Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Kenton: common questions
It follows the system size the heat loss survey calls for, the cylinder, and how many radiators change: a fire-rebuild cottage and a newer estate property often need different numbers. Rather than a misleading “from” price, every Kenton enquiry gets a free home assessment with a fixed estimate on the visit, and the grant comes off the invoice.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme. An eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales can qualify for £7,500 once a fossil fuel system comes out, which covers most Kenton addresses, or for £9,000 where the home sits off the gas grid and burns oil or LPG instead, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027. Whether a given Kenton address clears the criteria comes down to the building and to you, which the free visit resolves.
Book my free home assessmentRoughly a week on a typical Kenton property. We tend to start on a Monday and commission by Thursday or Friday. Water goes off in short spells, not whole days, and we run one or two jobs at a time, so whoever starts on your Kenton house is the one who finishes it.
Book my free home assessmentNo, and nothing is owed anywhere in Kenton throughout the process. Only the room-by-room heat loss survey is chargeable, at £250 plus VAT, and going ahead with the install cancels that fee entirely.
Book my free home assessmentUsually yes, once it is sized from measured heat loss rather than guessed at. The solid brick in the fire-rebuild cottages loses heat differently to a cavity semi on Penhayes or Castle Gate, so a handful of radiators in an older Kenton property may need to grow to hold the room at a heat pump’s lower flow temperature. You get the schedule in writing before anything is ordered.
