Heat pump installation Crediton: the High Street runs on gas, the lanes don’t
Crediton’s West Town sits on mains gas, rebuilt in Georgian brick after a 1743 fire tore through the older streets. Heat pump installation in Crediton starts with the walls we find on your street, not a postcode average.
James and the team provided a first rate end to end service, our old oil boiler failed on Good Friday and within 3/4 weeks we were up and running with a new energy efficient air source heating system.

What your Crediton installation includes
A heat pump that disappoints its owner is nearly always one specified in a hurry. That holds equally for a Georgian townhouse in West Town and a farmhouse out past Sandford, and this is what the work covers.
- The heat loss survey and the design it produces. We record wall type, glazing, floor build-up and how each room gets used, one room at a time, and the kilowatt figure that comes out of it belongs to your address and nowhere else.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. An outdoor unit picked for this particular building, a heat-pump-specific cylinder inside, sized against how the household really uses hot water rather than a spec-sheet default.
- Radiator changes where the numbers ask for them. On a solid Georgian or Victorian wall that can mean two or three emitters upsized. On a newer property further out, frequently none at all. Nothing is ordered until the schedule has reached you in writing.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. Routing flow and return through a house with no cavity to hide anything in is settled on the survey visit. The electrics normally take a day, and the unit lands on a prepared base in a position fixed by the MCS sound calculation.
- Commissioning and optimisation. Flow temperature set against the design figure, weather compensation configured, hot water timing agreed with you instead of left on factory defaults.
- The grant application. Filing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim is our job rather than yours, and the award is netted off well before an invoice is raised.
- Handover and aftercare. A run through the controls in plain English, then the same number to ring when the first service comes round.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope too, already down in a Crediton kitchen extension or going in fresh with the rest of the system. It runs happily at the low flow temperatures a heat pump produces, which is more than most Victorian radiators can say.
Air source heat pump installation Crediton: mains gas in town, oil and LPG on the lanes
Crediton is built in layers you can read from the street.
- East Town grew up first, the older working end of the wool town, spreading out east from the parish church of Holy Cross, which stands on the site of Devon’s first Saxon cathedral.
- West Town came later and grander, rebuilt in Georgian brick after the 1743 fire took out much of what stood there before. Victorian red-brick terraces filled in around the centre after that, solid-walled and slate-roofed. None of it was built with a cavity, and none of it was built with a heat pump in mind, which is exactly why the design has to start with the wall in front of us rather than the year on the deeds.
Wales & West Utilities renewed gas pipework across Crediton over the past year, and that mains connection is why most properties inside the town centre, in East Town, West Town and the Victorian streets around them, are coming off a gas boiler rather than an oil one.
- A short drive out changes the picture completely. Sandford, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Coleford and the other villages scattered through the Creedy valley sit off the gas network, so oil and LPG do the heating there, delivered by tanker rather than piped in. That is where most of our oil boiler replacement work around Crediton happens, swapping oil for an air-to-water heat pump sized off the survey.
- If you have been searching for a heat pump installer who will take on an older farmhouse rather than talk you out of it, that is the work we do all day. Exeter is seven miles down the A377, where we also cover heat pump installations in Exeter, and the same gas-town, oil-lane pattern runs the whole way between the two.
We do not price a Crediton property from its postcode either way.
- Eco Pro is the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist based on Exeter Road in Exmouth, and James Stalker has worked on heat pumps since 2010, past 100 installations, carrying out every assessment himself rather than sending a rep.
- Sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss survey, never a floor-area guess.

Why Crediton homeowners choose us
The cheapest quote on the table is rarely the one still answering the phone two winters later. Here is why Crediton homeowners tend to pick us anyway.
The owner runs your job.
- Commissioning, handover and aftercare are James’s, just like the assessment, the design and the days on site.
- A Crediton customer with a question later talks to the man who designed the system and never gets passed between departments. There is more on James on our about page.

The same man who audits other installers designs yours.
- James spends part of every month working as a freelance NAPIT MCS assessor, checking other companies’ heat pump installations against the standard they are meant to meet.
- He has seen what oversizing looks like from the inspector’s side, not only the installer’s.
Sizing comes from measurement.
- Every room, wall and window recorded before a kilowatt is specified, not inferred from a Crediton postcode or a floor-area rule of thumb.
Georgian, Victorian and older properties welcome.
- Solid walls, no cavity, an airing cupboard built for a very different era: we design around what a Crediton house is actually made from, not what a template assumes.
The grant deducted upfront, about a week on site.

- Where a property qualifies, we lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and take the award off your invoice before it is raised. It is never yours to pay out and reclaim.
- One or two jobs running at a time, a Monday start and a Thursday or Friday commission. The rest of our coverage is on our areas we cover page.

Grants and costs for Crediton homes
Not every property qualifies, since eligibility turns on your circumstances as much as the building, and which figure your own Crediton home can claim is something the free home assessment settles rather than assumes.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs we give it to you straight rather than as a headline number.
Set against a modern gas boiler in the town centre, the comparison is close and depends heavily on your tariff.
- Set against oil out toward the villages, what usually changes first is not a dramatic bill cut.
- The deliveries, the tank-watching and the January panic all go away, and that is usually the part households notice first. More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays towards an air-to-water heat pump replacing a fossil fuel system, and which figure applies depends on what a Crediton property is heating with now.
- A gas-heated home inside the town, in East Town, West Town or the streets around the centre, can qualify for £7,500.
- A property off the gas grid on oil or LPG, out toward Sandford, Cheriton Fitzpaine or Coleford, can qualify instead for the £9,000 heat pump grant, on any application lodged by 31 March 2027. Our MCS certification lets us file that application and deduct the award from your invoice at the outset, rather than leaving you to pay it and claim it back.
- VAT on qualifying work sits at 0% through to 31 March 2027.
The kit we fit in Crediton, and why
Four to ten kilowatts covers the overwhelming majority of what stands between the High Street and the villages beyond it, and because the cylinder arrangement barely changes from job to job, the install team meets a familiar layout every time.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
Unlike firms that fit one or two makes everywhere, we are tied to no single manufacturer, so a property of this type gets a heat pump matched to its measured heat loss and a cylinder to suit how it uses hot water, usually one that arrives already plumbed.
Ideal features on many of James’s installs and he knows it thoroughly; its units are UK-made so parts move quickly, and the cylinder turns up with its filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out already fitted at the factory.
In a Georgian townhouse where the airing cupboard was built for a very different era, lifting in a finished cylinder saves the best part of a day and removes a string of joints that could otherwise weep. That is a pattern in the numbers, not brand loyalty. Where a Crediton property genuinely needs something else, the heat loss survey shows it, and the design follows the building rather than the catalogue.

The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.

A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across Mid and East Devon, including Crediton, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton. Along the old A30, our Tedburn St Mary heat pump installation page covers the villages west of Exeter. The A3072 runs west from here toward Dartmoor’s northern edge, and our Okehampton page takes the granite-walled properties beyond it. Between here and Exeter on the A377 sit the cob cottages that air source heat pumps in Newton St Cyres are designed around.
Further west along the A3072, almost certainly a Roman road, Bow sits among parishes where more than a third of homes heat with oil, and a page for heat pumps around Bow covers them.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Crediton: common questions
It follows the size of the unit the heat loss survey calls for, the cylinder, and how many radiators need to change, which is why we never quote a “from” price. Every Crediton enquiry gets a free home assessment with a fixed estimate on the spot, and any grant you qualify for comes off that figure before you’re invoiced.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme. A gas-heated Crediton property in the town centre can qualify for £7,500 once the old boiler comes out. A property off the gas grid on oil or LPG, further out toward Sandford or Cheriton Fitzpaine, can instead qualify for £9,000, on any application lodged by 31 March 2027. Which figure applies to your own Crediton home is settled at the free home assessment, not assumed from your postcode.
Book my free home assessmentNo, and nothing is owed afterwards anywhere in Crediton. Only the room-by-room heat loss survey is chargeable, at £250 plus VAT, and that fee is cancelled in full if you go ahead with the install.
Book my free home assessmentRoughly a week for most Crediton properties. We typically start on a Monday and commission the system by Thursday or Friday. Hot water and heating go off in short spells during the work rather than for whole days at a time.
Book my free home assessmentIt changes the design, not whether it can be done. Solid Georgian and Victorian walls in Crediton’s town centre lose heat differently from a modern cavity wall, so a handful of radiators may need to grow to keep a room at the lower flow temperature a heat pump runs at. The heat loss survey tells us which ones before anything is ordered.
Book my free home assessmentOften more so than a gas-heated house in the centre. Properties off the gas grid on oil, around Sandford, Cheriton Fitzpaine and the other lanes outside Crediton, can qualify for the higher £9,000 grant rate on applications lodged by 31 March 2027, and the end of oil deliveries and tank-watching is usually what homeowners are most glad of. Thorverton and Silverton to the east, and Dunsford to the south, sit on the same round.
