Heat pump installation Beer: designed for flint walls, Beer stone and a village that runs downhill
A village built out of its own geology heats differently to a modern estate, so what heat pump installation Beer properties need is a fabric and levels job before it is a kit job. We are the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist on Exeter Road in Exmouth, and James Stalker draws every design.
James and the team provided a first rate end to end service, our old oil boiler failed on Good Friday and within 3/4 weeks we were up and running with a new energy efficient air source heating system. Totally recommend Eco Pro Renewables Ltd to anyone who asks

What your Beer installation includes
The design is the half of this job you never see, and it decides whether the system behaves in February. Everything below sits inside the figure we quote, and nothing turns up later as an extra.
- The room-by-room heat loss calculation. Wall build-up, glazing, exposure and how each room is genuinely lived in, logged inside the building. A flint-faced elevation and a rendered return on the same cottage go down separately.
- The unit and the cylinder. An outdoor unit chosen for the house handles the heat, and hot water goes into a cylinder made for heat pump temperatures. Where it stands matters more here than usual: a Beer property stepping down with the hill may have no conventional airing cupboard.
- Radiators, only where the figures argue for them. A room already carrying enough emitter keeps what it has. Others want something larger to hold temperature at a gentler flow, and you see that list before anything is bought.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. Flow and return frequently cross a change of level between the outdoor unit and the cylinder, and where a wall is solid flint with nothing inside to hide a run, the route gets drawn at survey stage rather than improvised on the first morning. Electrics normally take a single day, and the unit lands on a prepared base at a position fixed by the MCS sound calculation, which on a Beer terrace has to account for how close the neighbouring window sits.
- Commissioning and optimisation. Flow temperature set against the design figure, weather compensation configured, hot water timing agreed around your household.
- The grant application. Where a property qualifies, we lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim and net the award off, so the money never passes through your account.
- Handover and aftercare. We show you how to drive it in plain language, and afterwards you ring the person who drew the design.
Underfloor heating belongs to the same scope. We design and fit it, and a Beer property already running some downstairs starts ahead: low-temperature heating is exactly what it was made for.
Air source heat pump installation Beer starts with the walls, not the floor plan
Beer sits a little over a mile west of Seaton, built largely out of the ground beneath it.
- Flint faces many of the older buildings, the hard glassy stone the local chalk gives up.
- Beer stone came from caves in the hill behind, cut underground since Roman times and shipped to twenty-four cathedrals, Exeter, Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s among them, until the quarry closed in the 1920s.
All of that still stands in the walls, and it changes the heating job: flint and thick masonry behave nothing like a modern cavity, so a floor-area figure misjudges them both ways.
- Then there is the gradient.
- Fore Street falls to the shingle with the brook running alongside in its open channel, putting properties on terraces and split levels. That is why heat pump installation Beer starts with measurement, not a template. Our nearest published page along this coast covers heat pump installation in Sidmouth.
Every free home assessment and design is done by James Stalker, who owns the company: on heat pump work since 2010, over 100 systems behind him, and a freelance NAPIT MCS assessor who audits other firms’ work.
- Our air source heat pump installation is air-to-water only, warming radiators and a cylinder as your boiler does now, not air conditioning.
- Where a Beer property sits off the mains gas grid it is almost always burning oil or LPG, and the case for changing rests less on a promised bill cut than on stepping off a fuel whose price you cannot read.
Why Beer homeowners choose us
Before you pick a heat pump installer, Beer or anywhere else in East Devon, ask one question: who does the design? We are a heat pump company Beer homeowners deal with directly.
James does the work that decides the outcome.
- He takes the call, walks round the property, draws the design, then commissions and hands it over.
- Two winters later he still takes your aftercare calls about the system he drew, and nobody passes you to a salesperson or another department. Meet him on our about page.

He inspects other people’s installations for a living.
- As a freelance NAPIT MCS assessor, James audits other companies’ heat pump work, so your design comes from someone who sees weekly how jobs fail.
Measured heat loss, never a floor-area guess.
- We calculate what each room loses on the coldest day it will face, then choose and size the heat pump to that, generally in the 4 to 10 kW band.
- Oversize it and it short-cycles for years.
Older properties and period fabric welcome.
- Solid flint and stone walls alter the design, but almost never rule a system out.
- Told a property near Fore Street cannot take a heat pump? That is usually a refusal to do the arithmetic.
The grant handled, about a week on site.
The grant handled, about a week on site.
- Being MCS certified, we submit the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and take it off your invoice at the start, so the money never leaves your account.
- Work usually starts Monday and commissions Thursday or Friday, and afterwards you get the person who designed the system, plus servicing when it is due, anywhere in the areas we cover.
What homeowners say on Google
The heat pump grant Beer homeowners can apply for, and what is left to pay
No single figure exists for what heat pump installation costs in Beer: price follows the output, the cylinder and the radiator work, all settled by the heat loss survey.
Check if your home qualifiesRunning costs get straight talk, not a figure we cannot stand behind.
What shifts is the shape of the cost: no ordering fuel before a cold spell, no tank to watch in January.
- More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
Owner-occupiers in England or Wales replacing a fossil fuel system can claim £7,500 under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme against an air source heat pump.
- Whether a Beer property qualifies depends on the building and your circumstances both, so we check rather than presume, at the free assessment before pricing.
- Off the mains gas grid on oil or LPG, a property can instead qualify for the £9,000 heat pump grant, where the application is submitted by 31 March 2027.
- Qualifying installations carry 0% VAT to 31 March 2027, and since submitting the grant application is our job, the money comes off your invoice at the start. The scheme itself runs on past that date: the 2027 deadline belongs only to the higher rate for off-grid oil and LPG properties, so nobody should tell you the grant is ending.
The kit we fit in Beer, and why
For the typical off-grid home the measured heat loss gives the size of unit, and the room figures show which radiators can stay as they are.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
A Beer quote names whichever heat pump and cylinder suit that house, because we answer to no manufacturer while larger firms stay with one or two makes; often that is an Ideal outdoor unit with a cylinder that reaches site already plumbed.
Ideal build their units in the UK, one reason James reaches for them often, which counts for little in May and a great deal in the week a component fails and the replacement has to reach a village at the bottom of a hill on the Lyme Bay coast.
The pre-plumbed cylinder arrives with the diverter valve, filter, cylinder stat and overheat stat already fitted and wired at the factory, which matters in a Beer cottage where the cylinder often has to go up a narrow stair into a room nobody built for it. Four to ten kilowatts covers most of the village, from a small terrace part way down Fore Street to a larger detached house on the higher ground behind, whichever unit the survey points to. None of this is loyalty to a badge. Where measured heat loss at a Beer property lands outside that band, the design follows the building rather than the other way round.

A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across East Devon, including Beer, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton. The next valley west along the coast is Branscombe, thatch and old stone, heated on oil.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Beer: common questions
No single price exists; the system is sized to the building. Every Beer enquiry opens with a free home assessment and a fixed estimate on the day. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can take £7,500 off eligible properties, or £9,000 off those on oil or LPG away from the mains gas grid, where the application goes in by 31 March 2027. The £250 plus VAT heat loss survey is waived if you proceed.
Book my free home assessmentUsually, yes. Flint-faced, solid-walled Beer properties lose more heat than a modern build, and the heat loss survey measures that rather than assuming it. An air source heat pump Beer homeowners live with has to suit the building it goes into, not the other way round.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme, principally. A Beer property that is owner-occupied, in England or Wales, and running on oil or LPG away from the mains gas grid can qualify for £9,000, provided the application is made by 31 March 2027. Other eligible Beer properties, mains gas included, can qualify for £7,500.
Book my free home assessmentAbout a week at a typical Beer property, usually beginning Monday and commissioning Thursday or Friday. Access down the narrower village streets is planned at the free home assessment.
Book my free home assessmentSometimes. The heat loss survey settles it, not a guess on the doorstep. Out of it comes a radiator schedule naming which radiators, if any, want upsizing to run at a lower flow temperature. In older Beer properties a few usually do.
Book my free home assessmentMore places than people expect, settled at the free home assessment. On a Beer property the questions are the gradient, whether the unit sits on a different level from the cylinder, the airflow clearance, and what fixings flint or stone takes. An MCS sound calculation proves the spot stays inside noise limits next door.
