Heat Pump Installation Uffculme: A Mill Village With Oil in the Surrounding Lanes
Round Uffculme’s Square the houses are vernacular stone, while out toward Ashill, Craddock and Bradfield many properties still run on oil. Heat pump installation Uffculme means a room-by-room survey, a system sized to suit, and the grant deducted so you’re warm through winter.
James and the team provided a first rate end to end service, our old oil boiler failed on Good Friday and within 3/4 weeks we were up and running with a new energy efficient air source heating system.

What your Uffculme installation includes
A rushed spec is nearly always behind a heat pump that disappoints its owner. Every Uffculme installation we quote covers:
- The heat loss survey and design. We log wall construction, glazing and room use, room by room, for a kilowatt figure unique to your address.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. Outside, the make and model that suit your house; inside, a heat-pump-specific cylinder sized to the bathrooms the household runs.
- Radiator changes where the numbers ask for them. A stone cottage off the Square can need two or three upgraded emitters; a newer house past Coldharbour often needs none.
- The outdoor base, pipework and electrics. Settled on the survey visit and fixed by the MCS sound calculation.
- Commissioning, then fine-tuning. Flow temperature and hot water timing, agreed with you, not left on factory defaults.
- The grant application. Filed by us and netted off before the invoice is raised.
- Handover and aftercare. James walks you through the controls at commissioning and stays the person to call once servicing’s due.
Underfloor heating falls inside the same scope, suited to these systems’ low flow temperatures.
Heat pump installation Uffculme: a village built on its mills, not its fields
Round the Square and along Commercial Road, the houses are vernacular stone, two storeys, slate roofs, and hold heat differently to a modern cavity wall.
- Out past the centre, in hamlets like Ashill, Craddock and Bradfield, many properties still heat on oil, a tank in the yard and a tanker on call.
We are the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist on Exeter Road in Exmouth, and James Stalker has been on heat pumps since 2010, with past 100 installations behind him.
- Sizing comes off a room-by-room heat loss survey, never a guess from a stone frontage.
A few miles south we also cover heat pump installation in Cullompton.

Why Uffculme homeowners choose us
The cheapest quote round Uffculme’s Square rarely survives its first hard winter intact, and what actually matters two winters on is whether that installer still picks up the phone.
The owner runs your job.
- The about page has more on James, who does the assessing, designing and commissioning from first visit to handover, then stays on for aftercare.
- You phone him, and he knows the system he designed.

Your designer inspects everybody else’s work.
- James works as a freelance MCS assessor for NAPIT, judging other installers’ work against the standard.
Sizing comes from measurement, not a postcode.
- Room and wall type get recorded first; the kilowatt figure follows.
Older and period properties welcome.
- A stone cottage off the Square behaves nothing like a newer build past Coldharbour; both get designed properly.
The grant handled and taken off the price, about a week on site.

- We lodge the application and subtract it first; two jobs at once is our limit.
- We also cover heat pump installation in Tiverton.

Grants and costs for Uffculme homes
We apply for the grant and deduct it from your quote. You never pay the grant and reclaim it.
Check if your home qualifiesEligibility depends on the property and your circumstances, so not every Uffculme home qualifies.
We confirm yours at the free home assessment before anything is promised.
- On running costs we’re straight: against cheap oil the saving is usually modest.
- What changes is no delivery, no tank to watch. More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays an eligible owner-occupier, replacing a fossil fuel system, toward an air-to-water heat pump.
- £7,500 applies to many homes in the village itself, generally on mains gas.
- £9,000 applies for homes off the gas grid on oil or LPG, toward Ashill, Craddock and Bradfield, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027.
- Qualifying installations carry 0% VAT through the same date.
The kit we fit in Uffculme, and why
For the typical off-grid home the measured heat loss gives the size of unit, and the room figures show which radiators can stay as they are.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
Eco Pro isn’t tied to one manufacturer: James fits Ideal often, but picks the unit and cylinder each property needs, usually a cylinder that arrives already plumbed, filter and overheat cut-out fitted at the factory.
Ideal builds its units in the UK, so their spares move fast, useful in a stone cottage off the Square where the airing cupboard predates central heating.
Four to ten kilowatts covers most properties here. If a property needs something different, the heat loss survey is what tells us.

Book my free home assessmentYour heat loss survey and design
A full room-by-room heat loss survey and a designed system, with a fixed written scope and price. The survey is £250 plus VAT, and that fee is wiped from the final bill when you go ahead with the install.
Installation and commissioning
A clean MCS install, usually about a week start to finish, one or two jobs at a time, with the system properly commissioned and dialled in.
Handover and aftercare
We show you how it runs, and we are here afterwards, with servicing when it is due.
“After comparing several quotes and gathering details I decided to go with Eco Pro after speaking with James and couldn’t be happier. Their design was really detailed, explained clearly and the heat pump works perfectly.”

A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across East Devon and into Mid Devon, including Uffculme, Cullompton, Tiverton, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton. The next parish west runs to seven hamlets, from Blackborough down to Orway, and all of it is on our Kentisbeare page.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
What Uffculme callers ask before they book
Radiators, hot water setup and the property’s size settle the price, so every Uffculme enquiry opens with a free home assessment. Cost comes from the heat loss survey.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme. An eligible owner-occupier can qualify for £7,500 once a fossil fuel system comes out. A Uffculme home off the gas grid on oil or LPG can instead qualify for £9,000, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027.
Book my free home assessmentUsually yes, provided it’s designed to the walls rather than guessed at. Stone cottages round Coldharbour hold heat differently to a modern cavity wall, so the heat loss survey carries more weight in Uffculme’s older streets, not less.
Book my free home assessmentAbout a week. We usually start on a Monday and commission on the Thursday or Friday, water off only in short spells. We run at most two jobs at once, so your Uffculme installation stays with the crew that started it.
Book my free home assessmentYes, provided it’s sized to the building rather than guessed at. Every room in your Uffculme property gets measured in the heat loss survey, and that’s what shapes the design.
Book my free home assessmentSometimes. A heat pump runs at a gentler flow temperature than a boiler, so an older Uffculme property may need a few radiators upsized. Your heat loss survey decides which, room by room.
