Heat Pump Installation Tiverton: The Mill Town’s Terraces Decide The Design
Wool money built Tiverton’s old Georgian terraces; Heathcoat’s 1815 lace mill raised West Exe’s millworker rows after it. Heat pump installation in Tiverton starts by working out which one your house is, before a single component gets ordered.
James and the team provided a first rate end to end service, our old oil boiler failed on Good Friday and within 3/4 weeks we were up and running with a new energy efficient air source heating system.

Everything a Tiverton installation includes
A heat pump that disappoints its owner is nearly always one specified in a hurry. Most of the cost goes on working out what the building needs before a single component is ordered. Here is what a Tiverton installation from us covers.
- The heat loss survey and the design it produces. Wall construction, glazing, floor build-up and how each room is actually used, recorded one room at a time, giving a kilowatt figure that belongs to your address alone.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. A heat pump chosen for the property outside, a heat-pump-specific cylinder inside, sized against real bathroom and hot water use rather than a spec sheet default.
- Radiator changes where the numbers ask for them. On a solid-wall terrace near Bampton Street that can mean two or three upgraded emitters. On a cavity-built house off the Lowman it can mean none. Everything on the schedule is confirmed to you in writing before parts get ordered.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. Running flow and return through a solid-wall cottage is a different job from a modern semi, so the route gets settled on the survey visit. Electrics normally take a day, and the outdoor unit lands on a prepared base positioned against the MCS sound calculation.
- Commissioning and optimisation. Design figure in, weather compensation on, hot water timing set around how the household runs rather than left at defaults.
- The grant application. Filing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim is our job rather than yours, and the award comes off before an invoice is raised.
- Handover and aftercare. We finish with the controls explained properly, and when the first service falls due you ring the number you already know.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope, in a new extension or a renovated ground floor. It runs happily at the lower flow temperatures these systems produce, which is more than every radiator in an older Tiverton house can say.
Air source heat pump installation Tiverton: terraces, estates and Exe valley farms
Tiverton is Mid Devon’s largest town, a little over 22,000 people, at the point where the River Lowman meets the River Exe. That confluence gives the name: Twyford, the town of two fords.
- Wool paid for the Georgian terraces in the historic core, then the trade declined and John Heathcoat brought his lace-making business here after Luddites wrecked his Loughborough factory.
- His family went on to build West Exe, solid-wall rows of seven to eleven houses that still stand today.
Off the gas grid on oil or LPG is not how most of Tiverton itself heats.
- Wales & West Utilities maintains the gas network reaching the town centre and the estates that followed once the A361 opened. It is the ring of villages around the town, Bickleigh, Cadeleigh, Halberton and Sampford Peverell among them, where oil and LPG tanks are the norm rather than the exception. In those villages the call is nearly always oil boiler replacement, and the sums are done the same way: room by room, against the fabric the house actually has. Out on the B3137, Witheridge has mains gas in about one home in fifteen, and we go into a Witheridge heat pump survey expecting a house off the gas grid.
- The South West already has the highest share of off-gas-grid homes of any English region. Fifteen miles south, on the road toward Exmouth, we also cover heat pump installation in Exeter.
We are the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist on Exeter Road in Exmouth, and James Stalker, the owner, has been on heat pumps since 2010, with past 100 installations behind him.
- See how we design an air source heat pump installation.
- Sizing comes off a room-by-room heat loss survey, never a floor-area rule of thumb.
Tiverton is roughly 30 miles and about forty minutes from our base up the M5, and it is the biggest single town on our patch, which is exactly why we never price a job from a postcode alone.
Six things that separate us on a Tiverton job
A heat pump installer Tiverton homeowners can still reach two winters on beats the lowest number on a quote. Six reasons to deal with us directly.
The owner runs your job.
- James assesses, designs, oversees the install, commissions and hands over.
- Aftercare goes through him as well, in town or out on the Exe valley farms, so you speak to someone who knows your system. His army and trade years are on the about page.

Your designer inspects everybody else’s work too.
- NAPIT contracts James as a freelance MCS assessor, so part of his month goes on judging other companies’ heat pump installations against the standard.
- Oversizing is not a theory to him.
Sizing comes from measurement, not a formula.
- Every room, wall and window recorded before a kilowatt gets specified.
- Guessing from floor area is how short-cycling systems end up in houses.
Older properties are welcome, not politely declined.
- A solid-wall terrace on Bampton Street and a stone farmhouse out past Halberton are different design problems, and we take both on.

Grants and costs for Tiverton homes
Which figure your own Tiverton property qualifies for is something the free home assessment settles, on the building and the fuel it burns rather than on a postcode.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs, the honest version.
We will not put a percentage or an annual figure in front of you, because the real answer turns on your tariff and your fabric.
- For a household on oil out past Halberton, what changes is the machinery around the bill: no tank to watch, no delivery to chase.
- More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, an eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales, swapping out a fossil fuel heating system, can qualify for £7,500 towards an air-to-water heat pump.
- That is the rate that applies to most properties inside Tiverton itself.
- Where a property has no mains gas connection and burns oil or LPG instead, commonly the case out toward Bickleigh, Cadeleigh, Halberton and Sampford Peverell, it can instead qualify for the £9,000 heat pump grant on any application lodged by 31 March 2027.
- Eligibility is not automatic: your circumstances count for as much as the building does. Our MCS certification lets us file that application and take the grant off your invoice at the outset, rather than leaving you to fund it and claim it back afterwards.
- VAT on qualifying work sits at 0% through to 31 March 2027.
The kit we fit in Tiverton, and why
Four to ten kilowatts covers the great majority of what stands between the historic core and the newer estates north of the A361, and because the cylinder arrangement barely changes from job to job, the install team meets a familiar build nearly every time.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
We are not tied to one manufacturer the way some big firms are, so the outdoor unit is picked for each property’s heat loss, hot water demand and space, then paired with a cylinder that usually arrives already plumbed.
Ideal builds its units in the UK, one reason we fit them often, and that cylinder reaches us with its filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out already fitted and wired at the factory. That earns its keep in a West Exe terrace where the airing cupboard is often a converted alcove barely wide enough to stand in, and in a farmhouse past Cadeleigh where the cylinder cupboard was never built with a heat pump in mind either. Lifting in a finished cylinder saves the best part of a day on site and removes a fistful of joints that could ever weep.
None of that is loyalty to a badge. Where a Tiverton property genuinely needs something else, the heat loss survey shows it, and the design follows the building rather than the catalogue.

A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.

The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across Mid and East Devon, including Tiverton, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill, Honiton and neighbouring Cullompton. Down toward the motorway, our Sampford Peverell heat pump installation page covers the villages off the M5. Toward the Blackdown Hills, heat pump installation in Uffculme is on the same patch. Down toward the motorway, our Willand heat pump installation page covers the villages off junction 27.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Tiverton: common questions
Usually, yes, if it is designed for the wall rather than guessed at. Solid-wall Victorian terraces around West Exe give heat back on a different rhythm from a cavity-built house, so the room-by-room heat loss survey carries more weight in Tiverton’s older streets. We measure first and choose the kit after.
Book my free home assessmentIt follows the system size the survey calls for, the cylinder, and how many radiators need to change. Rather than a misleading “from” price, every Tiverton enquiry gets a free home assessment with a fixed estimate on the visit, and any grant you qualify for comes off before the invoice.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme. An eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales can qualify for £7,500 once a fossil fuel system comes out, or for £9,000 where the home sits off the gas grid on oil or LPG, on an application lodged by 31 March 2027. Much of Tiverton itself sits on the gas network, while the surrounding villages more often burn oil or LPG. Which rate your address clears is something the free home assessment resolves.
Book my free home assessmentRoughly a week on a typical Tiverton property. We tend to start on a Monday and commission on the Thursday or Friday, with your water off in short spells rather than whole days.
Book my free home assessmentNo, and no obligation attaches to it anywhere in Tiverton. Only the heat loss survey is chargeable, at £250 plus VAT, wiped in full if you go ahead with the install.
Book my free home assessmentCheck what you are heating with now. Most properties inside Tiverton itself run on mains gas. Out toward Bickleigh, Cadeleigh, Halberton and Sampford Peverell, oil and LPG are far more common, since the gas network does not reach those lanes. We confirm which applies to your property, and which grant rate follows from it, at the free home assessment. From here we also reach Bampton to the north, and Silverton and Bradninch to the south.
South Molton, up the A361 on the River Mole, has most of the town on mains gas and far more oil in the outlying parishes, as our South Molton page sets out.
