Heat Pump Installation Exminster: Old Walls Next Door to New Ones
Exminster’s housing splits in two: pre-1800 stone cottages near Church Stile, and 2,000+ new homes at South West Exeter past the M5. Heat pump installation in Exminster starts with a free home assessment, since the two size very differently.
The heat pump is almost silent, which was something we were worried about, and the results have been fantastic. We’re lovely and warm and always have plenty of hot water.

What your Exminster installation includes
A heat pump that disappoints its owner is nearly always one specified in a hurry. Most of the cost here goes on working out what the building needs before a single component is ordered. This is what the work covers.
- The heat loss survey and the design it produces. Wall construction, glazing, floor build-up and how each room actually gets used, recorded one room at a time. Out of that comes a kilowatt figure that belongs to your address alone, a rendered stone cottage off Church Stile or a house on the new estate.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. A heat pump on the outside wall, picked to suit the house, and a heat-pump-specific cylinder indoors, sized for the bathrooms your household actually uses.
- Radiator changes where the numbers ask for them. On an older solid-walled cottage that can mean two or three emitters going up a size, on a recently built house frequently none at all. The schedule reaches you in writing before anything is bought.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. Getting flow and return from the outdoor unit to a cylinder in an airing cupboard built for towels, not pipework, is half the job on the older streets, so the route gets settled at the survey visit. Electrics normally take a day, and the unit lands on a base fixed by the MCS sound calculation.
- Commissioning and optimisation. Flow temperature goes in at the design figure, weather compensation gets configured, and hot water timing is agreed around your routine, not the factory default.
- The grant application. Filing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim is our job, not yours, and the award is netted off well before an invoice is raised.
- Handover and aftercare. You get the controls walked through in plain English, and the number for your first service is the one you already have.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope too, already down or going in fresh. It runs happily at the low flow temperatures these systems produce, more than most radiators can say.
Air source heat pump installation Exminster: measured for the home you actually have
Exminster splits into two distinct ages of building, a few hundred yards apart.
- Around Church Stile and the streets near the parish church, rendered stone cottages from the late 1700s make up the oldest part of the village, most of them on mains gas. The parish church, St Martin of Tours, is Grade I listed and dates from the late 14th and 15th centuries.
- Past the M5 junction, the South West Exeter development is adding more than two thousand new homes to the parish, a scale of building the village has never carried before. Two eras of construction, and neither tells you what the other needs from a heat pump.
Push out toward the marshes and the outlying farms, and the picture changes: oil and LPG take over from the mains, a tank in a field rather than a meter on the wall.
- The bulk of that work is oil boiler replacement: an air source unit takes over, the oil line is disconnected and capped, and an older property that has burned oil for decades runs on a flow temperature its radiators can actually use. That shift decides which grant applies, and it is a different job from a gas-connected cottage on Church Stile.
- We also cover heat pump installations in Exeter, three and a half miles up the same road.
We work out of Exeter Road in Exmouth.
- We are the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist there, and James Stalker, the owner, has worked on heat pumps since 2010, with past 100 installations behind him.
- Sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss survey rather than a floor-area rule of thumb.

Your designer inspects everybody else’s work.
- NAPIT contracts James as a freelance MCS assessor, so part of his month goes on judging other companies’ installations against the standard.
- Oversizing is not a theory to him.
Sizing comes from measurement, not the address.
- Every room, wall type and window recorded before a kilowatt is specified.
- A house on Station Road and one on the new estate a few streets over can call for entirely different units.
Older and period properties are welcome.
- A rendered stone cottage, a thatched roof, a converted flat inside Devington Park: each changes the design rather than ending the conversation.
- Being told a property is unsuitable is usually a company avoiding the design work.
The grant handled, about a week on site.
- We are MCS certified, so we file the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and take it off your invoice before you pay anything, and the money never passes through your account.
- One or two jobs at a time, work usually starting Monday and commissioned by Thursday or Friday, and Exminster sits inside the areas we cover.

Grants and costs for Exminster homes
Our MCS certification lets us file the grant application and knock the grant off your invoice at the outset, rather than leaving you to fund it and claim it back. Which figure your own Exminster property qualifies for is something the free home assessment settles, on the building in front of us, not a postcode guess.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs you get it straight.
We will not put a percentage or an annual figure in front of you: the honest answer depends on your tariff, your fabric and what is being replaced.
- For a household coming off oil near the marsh edge, what changes is the machinery around the bill: no tank to watch, no delivery to chase.
- More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, an eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales replacing a fossil fuel system can claim £7,500 towards an air-to-water heat pump, which covers most of Exminster, older streets and the South West Exeter development alike.
- Not every property qualifies, and the rules turn on your circumstances as much as the building.
- Where a property has no mains gas connection and burns oil or LPG instead, commonly the case toward the marshes and the outlying farms, it can qualify for the £9,000 heat pump grant, on any application lodged by 31 March 2027.
- VAT on qualifying work sits at 0% through to 31 March 2027.
The kit we fit in Exminster, and why
Four to ten kilowatts covers most of Exminster, and unlike firms fixed on one or two makes we match the unit to the house, while the pre-plumbed cylinder keeps the install team on a familiar build.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
We install Ideal often and know the range well, yet Eco Pro is not tied to one manufacturer, so each property gets the heat pump and cylinder its heat loss and hot water demand call for.
Ideal’s units are UK-made, so their spares move quickly, and the cylinder we usually fit reaches site with its filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out already mounted and wired.
In an older Exminster cottage where the airing cupboard was built for linen rather than a heating system, lifting in a finished cylinder saves the best part of a day and removes a fistful of chances to make a poor joint on site. It suits the South West Exeter development just as well, where a fixed handover date matters more than the postcode. None of that is loyalty to a badge. Where an Exminster property genuinely calls for something else, the heat loss survey shows it, and the design follows the building.

A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across East Devon and Teignbridge, including Exminster, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton. Further up toward the moor, our Bovey Tracey heat pump installation page covers the gateway towns. On the Exeter approach, our Kennford heat pump installation page covers the villages along the A38.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Exminster: common questions
It follows the system size the heat loss survey calls for, the cylinder, and how many radiators change, which differs sharply between a solid-walled cottage near Church Stile and a house on the new estate. Rather than a misleading “from” price, every Exminster enquiry gets a free home assessment with a fixed estimate on the visit, and the grant comes off the invoice.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme. An eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales can qualify for £7,500 once a fossil fuel system comes out, which covers most of Exminster on mains gas, or for £9,000 where the home sits off the gas grid and burns oil or LPG, common toward the marshes and the farms outside the village, on any application lodged by 31 March 2027. Which figure a given Exminster address clears comes down to the building and to you, settled at the free home assessment.

Book my free home assessmentNo, and no obligation attaches to it anywhere in Exminster. Only the room-by-room heat loss survey is chargeable, at £250 plus VAT, and going ahead with the install wipes that fee entirely.
Book my free home assessmentOften, yes, in some rooms. Solid, older walls lose more heat per square metre, so a handful of emitters may need to grow to hold the room at the lower flow temperature a heat pump runs at, around 45 to 50°C. In a recently built Exminster house on the new estate, more of what is already there tends to stay. You get the schedule in writing before anything is ordered.
Book my free home assessmentNo. There is no direct crossing over the Exe near the village, so a job in Exminster runs about twenty minutes from Exmouth, through Exeter and back down the other side. James attends every assessment in person and stays on as the point of contact through to handover.
