Heat pump installation Dawlish: three miles by water, twenty by road
Twenty miles of road separates Exmouth from Dawlish, since the Exe has no bridge near its mouth and the Starcross ferry carries bikes, not heat pump units. Heat pump installation in Dawlish still starts with a room-by-room survey once we’ve made the drive.
He went above and beyond to help update the heating system in our current housing project. Communication was outstanding throughout, he responded quickly and always provided clear explanations whenever we had questions.

What your Dawlish installation includes, itemised
A heat pump that lets its owner down is nearly always one specified in a hurry. This is what a Dawlish installation from us covers, on a villa near Park Road or a bungalow off Elm Grove Road.
- The heat loss survey and the design it produces. Wall construction, glazing, floor build-up and how each room actually gets used, recorded one room at a time. Out of that comes a kilowatt figure that belongs to your address, not a formula.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. A heat pump outside that fits the house and its heat loss, a heat-pump-specific hot water cylinder inside, sized against how the household really uses hot water rather than a spec-sheet default.
- Radiator changes where the survey calls for them. On a solid Victorian wall that can mean two or three larger emitters; in a well-built 1970s bungalow, often none at all. The schedule reaches you in writing before anything is ordered.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. The route from outdoor unit to cylinder is settled on the survey visit, the electrics normally take a day, and the unit lands on a base positioned against the MCS sound calculation and, this close to the sea, against the weather.
- Commissioning and optimisation. Flow temperature set to the design figure, weather compensation configured, hot water timing agreed with you instead of left on whatever the factory shipped.
- The grant application. Filing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim is our job rather than yours, and any award you qualify for is netted off before an invoice is raised.
- Handover and aftercare. A walkthrough of the controls in plain English, then the same number to ring when the first service comes round.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope, already down in a bungalow extension or going in fresh as part of the job. It runs happily at the low flow temperatures these systems use, more than most radiators can say.
Air source heat pump installation Dawlish: gas in town, oil out past the lanes
Dawlish grew from a fishing village into a full Victorian resort inside a few decades, and the housing stock still shows the join.
- Around The Strand, Brunswick Place and Park Road, the Georgian and Victorian building boom left solid-walled villas and terraces, some three storeys tall on streets that climb straight off the seafront.
- Further back, toward Elm Grove Road and the Oakland Park estate, the twentieth century filled in with bungalow estates built for people who wanted to stop climbing stairs. A three-storey Victorian villa and a 1970s bungalow on the same postcode want different heat pump designs, and pricing either off a floor plan alone gets it wrong.
The town is largely on mains gas, and Wales & West Utilities has been renewing pipework through Dawlish this year. That puts the standard £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme rate within reach for most eligible households inside town.
- Head inland up the Haldon lanes toward Ashcombe and the gas main runs out, at a higher grant bracket covered further down this page.
- Up those lanes the job is usually oil boiler replacement; down in town we are more often in an older property, one of the solid-walled villas off The Strand, where the heat loss has to be measured rather than assumed. Dawlish sits twelve miles south of Exeter, and anyone closer to the city is better served by our heat pump installation Exeter page.
We are the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist on Exeter Road in Exmouth, and James Stalker, the owner, carries out every assessment himself: on heat pumps since 2010, past 100 installations.
- Sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss survey, never a floor-area guess or a postcode assumption.

Why Dawlish homeowners choose us
A heat pump installer Dawlish homeowners can still reach two winters on beats the lowest number on a quote.
The owner runs your job.
- The person who surveys your house designs the system, is there while it goes in, commissions it and hands it over: James, first visit to aftercare, and our about page covers his army years.
- Later questions reach the surveyor who drew it up, never bounced between departments.
Your designer inspects everybody else’s work.
Your designer inspects everybody else’s work.
- NAPIT contracts James as a freelance MCS assessor, so part of his month goes on judging other companies’ heat pump installations against the standard.
- Oversizing is not a theory to him.
Sizing comes from measurement.
- Every room, wall type and window recorded before a kilowatt is specified, on a Victorian villa near The Lawn just as much as a bungalow further back from the front.
Older and coastal properties welcome.
- Solid Victorian walls, a house exposed to salt air, a bungalow with a shallow roof void: an unsuitable verdict from another firm is usually a design shortcut, not a fact about your house.
Grant sorted and taken off the price upfront, and roughly a week of work on site.
- We lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and take any award off your invoice before it is raised, so the money never sits in your account waiting to be claimed back.
- Work usually starts Monday and is commissioned by Thursday or Friday, one job at a time this close to the coast. The rest of our patch is on our areas we cover page.

Grants and costs for Dawlish homes
Which figure your own Dawlish property qualifies for, and whether it qualifies at all, is something the free home assessment settles rather than assumes.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs, the honest version.
We will not put a percentage or an annual saving in front of you, because the real number depends on your tariff, your fabric and what you are replacing.
- For a household coming off oil out past Ashcombe, what changes most is the arrangement itself: no tank to watch, no delivery to chase through a wet Devon winter.
- More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays towards an air-to-water heat pump replacing a fossil fuel system.
- The majority of Dawlish properties are on mains gas, so £7,500 is the rate most eligible households in town can qualify for.
- Off the gas main out past Ashcombe, oil and LPG properties can qualify for the higher rate on our £9,000 heat pump grant for oil and LPG homes, on any application lodged by 31 March 2027.
- Not every property qualifies; eligibility turns on the building as much as the postcode. Being MCS certified lets us file that application and deduct the award from your invoice before it is raised, so you never pay it out and reclaim it after.
- 0% VAT applies to qualifying installations through to 31 March 2027.
The kit we fit in Dawlish, and why
Four to ten kilowatts covers the large majority of what we measure across the town, from a Victorian villa near The Lawn to a post-war bungalow further back.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
For each Dawlish property we choose the heat pump and cylinder that suit it, tied to no single manufacturer the way bigger firms are to their one or two makes, and the cylinder we usually fit arrives pre-plumbed, filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out already fitted at the factory.
We fit Ideal often and Ideal build in the UK, which matters this close to the sea: kit standing in salt-laden air off the Channel gets looked at more often, and a part that turns up on Tuesday beats one shipped from overseas.
In a bungalow off Elm Grove Road the airing cupboard is often a modest built-in space, and lifting in a finished cylinder saves a day of first fix and a fistful of joints that could otherwise weep. None of that is loyalty to a badge. Where a Dawlish property genuinely needs something else, the heat loss survey says so and the design follows the building.

Exmouth
A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across East Devon and Teignbridge, including Dawlish, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton. A short way along the coast, heat pump installation in Bishopsteignton covers the villages above the Teign estuary. Inland from the coast, heat pump installation in Newton Abbot covers the market town. Ten miles or so down the coast past Teignmouth, our Torquay page covers the bay and the big Victorian houses above it.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Dawlish: common questions
It follows the size of the unit the survey calls for, the cylinder and how many radiators change, so a published “from” price would mislead. Every Dawlish enquiry gets a free home assessment with a fixed estimate on the visit, and that price is the price you pay.
Book my free home assessmentThe Boiler Upgrade Scheme. An eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales can qualify for £7,500 once a fossil fuel system comes out, which covers most homes inside Dawlish on mains gas. Where a property sits off the gas grid on oil or LPG, out toward Ashcombe, it can qualify for £9,000 instead, on any application lodged by 31 March 2027. Which figure applies to your own Dawlish property is settled at the free home assessment. Along the A379, Starcross, Kenton and Teignmouth homes are checked at that same visit.
Book my free home assessmentIt is one of the things James weighs at the free home assessment, alongside airflow clearance and the pipe run to the cylinder. Dawlish sits close against the sea below the red sandstone cliffs, so exposure gets factored into the position for a Dawlish install before the MCS sound calculation confirms it, not decided by whatever space happens to be free on the day.
Book my free home assessmentRoughly a week on a typical Dawlish property. We usually start on a Monday and commission on the Thursday or Friday, and your water goes off in short spells rather than for whole days.
Book my free home assessmentNo, and nothing is owed anywhere in Dawlish for it. Only the room-by-room heat loss survey is chargeable, at £250 plus VAT, and that fee is wiped in full if you go ahead with the install.
Book my free home assessmentSometimes, and it depends more on the wall than the era. A heat pump runs at a gentler flow temperature than a boiler, typically 45 to 50°C, so a handful of radiators may need to grow. On a Dawlish job the heat loss survey names them room by room, on a solid-walled villa the same as a cavity-built bungalow.
