Heat Pump Installation Cullompton: Fore Street’s Solid Walls, Willand Road’s New Cavities
Fore Street’s C17 merchant houses and the new estates off Willand Road are both Cullompton, growing fast around its own M5 junction. Heat pump installation in Cullompton starts the same way on either: we measure the property before we choose a single piece of kit.
Their design was really detailed, explained clearly and the heat pump works perfectly. Would definitely recommend and already booked in for a few of our other properties.

What your Cullompton installation includes
A heat pump that disappoints somebody almost always got specified in a hurry. Most of what you’re paying for is the thinking that happens before a single component is ordered. Every Cullompton installation we quote covers:
- The heat loss survey and the design it produces. Wall construction, glazing, floor build-up and how each room actually gets used, recorded one at a time, so the kilowatt figure belongs to your address and nobody else’s.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. The outdoor unit that suits the house, a heat-pump-specific cylinder inside, sized against how many bathrooms the household really runs rather than a catalogue default.
- Radiator changes where the numbers call for them. On a solid Fore Street frontage that can mean two or three upgraded emitters; on a new-build off Willand Road, frequently none. You have the schedule in writing before we order a thing.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. Getting flow and return between the outdoor unit and the cylinder is settled on the survey visit, the electrics normally take a day, and the unit lands on a base fixed by the MCS sound calculation.
- Commissioning and optimisation. Flow temperature set to the design figure, weather compensation configured, hot water timing agreed with you rather than left on the factory default.
- The grant application. Filing the Boiler Upgrade Scheme claim is our job, and the award is netted off before an invoice is raised.
- Handover and aftercare. A walk-through of the controls in plain English, then the same number to ring when the first service comes round.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope too, already down or going in alongside everything else. It runs happily at the low flow temperatures these systems use, more than most radiators can manage.
Air source heat pump installation Cullompton: two centuries of wall types in one town
Cullompton grew rich on wool.
- Fore Street and the High Street still carry the C17 merchant houses that money built, among them Walronds and the Manor House, solid stone, cob and timber frame with nothing to fill because the cavity wall had not been invented yet, and St Andrew’s Church has a fan-vaulted aisle a cloth merchant called John Lane paid for in the 1520s.
- The M5 changed the town from the other direction. Junction 28 sits on Cullompton’s own doorstep, the motorway turned it into a commuter town from the 1970s onward, and new estates have gone up off Willand Road and Tiverton Road ever since, with a further garden village of several thousand homes planned for the east side of town.
Fuel follows a similar split.
- Cullompton itself sits on the mains gas network, so most in-town properties are swapping out a gas boiler rather than an oil one. Head east past Kentisbeare toward the Blackdown Hills fringe and oil and LPG take over, the pattern across most of rural Mid Devon.
- Out that way the work is mostly oil boiler replacement, the oil line capped and an air source unit in, sized off the same room-by-room survey we run on Fore Street’s older walls. The run from Exmouth is up the A376 to the M5 at Junction 30, then north to Junction 28, a road that also passes close to heat pump installation in Broadclyst, nearer Exeter.
None of that changes how we work.
- We are the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist on Exeter Road in Exmouth, and James Stalker, the owner, has been on heat pumps since 2010, with past 100 installations behind him, and still runs every assessment himself.
- Sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss survey, never a floor-area guess.

Your designer inspects everybody else’s work.
- NAPIT contracts James as a freelance MCS assessor, so part of his month goes on judging other companies’ heat pump installations against the standard.
- Oversizing is not a theory to him.
Sizing comes from measurement, not a postcode.
- Every room, wall type and window recorded before a kilowatt gets specified.
- A Fore Street merchant house and a new-build off Tiverton Road are different engineering problems, and guessing is how short-cycling systems end up in either.
Older properties are not turned away.
- Solid wall, cob, stone, C17 brick: being told a Cullompton property cannot take a heat pump is usually a company avoiding the design work rather than a fact about the house.
The grant handled, about a week on site.
- Where a property qualifies, we lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application ourselves and subtract it before you’re invoiced. It is never yours to lay out and claim back.
- Two jobs at once is our ceiling, so whoever starts your Cullompton install is the one who finishes it. The rest of our patch is on the areas we cover page.

Grants and costs for Cullompton homes
We are MCS certified, so we lodge whichever application applies and knock the grant off your invoice at the outset rather than leaving you to fund it and claim it back. Not every property or household qualifies, and which figure your own Cullompton address can claim is something the free home assessment settles, not a postcode lookup.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs we’re straight with you.
We won’t put a percentage or a pound figure on this page, because the honest answer depends on your tariff, your fabric and what’s being replaced.
- For a Cullompton household coming off oil, what changes most is the machinery around the bill: no delivery to schedule, no tank to check before a cold snap.
- More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
The majority of Cullompton properties sit on the mains gas network, so an eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales, replacing a fossil fuel system, can typically qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme’s standard £7,500.
- Out past Kentisbeare, toward the Blackdown Hills fringe, where the lanes run on oil and LPG rather than mains gas, an off-gas-grid Cullompton property burning oil or LPG can instead qualify for the £9,000 heat pump grant, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027.
- Full conditions sit on our off-grid oil and LPG grant page.
- VAT on qualifying installations sits at 0% through to 31 March 2027, and since April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer strictly required to apply.
The kit we fit in Cullompton, and why
Four to ten kilowatts covers the overwhelming majority of what stands between the old wool town and the motorway.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
We aren’t held to one manufacturer, which sets us apart from big firms stuck on one or two makes: the outdoor unit is chosen for the house, and it is usually paired with a cylinder that arrives already plumbed.
We fit plenty of Ideal units, which are UK-made, so spares move fast, and the cylinder turns up with its filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out already fitted and wired. In a Fore Street merchant house, where the airing cupboard was built in three centuries before heat pumps existed, lifting in a finished cylinder saves the best part of a day and removes a fistful of chances to make a poor joint.
On the new estates off Willand Road and Tiverton Road the win is different: modern cavity walls give more room to work in, but the same pre-plumbed cylinder still means the install team meets a familiar build wherever the job is in town. None of that is loyalty to a badge. Where a Cullompton property genuinely calls for something else, the heat loss survey shows it, and the design follows the building.

The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.

The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.

A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across Mid and East Devon, including Cullompton, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill, Honiton and neighbouring Tiverton. Toward the Blackdown Hills, heat pump installation in Hemyock is on the same patch. Further into Somerset, heat pump installation in Taunton is covered from the same base. Along the M5 corridor into Somerset, heat pump installation in Wellington is on the same patch.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Cullompton: common questions
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme. The majority of Cullompton properties sit on the mains gas network and, as eligible owner-occupied homes in England or Wales replacing a fossil fuel system, can qualify for £7,500. Where a Cullompton address is off the gas grid and burns oil or LPG, out towards Kentisbeare for instance, it can instead qualify for £9,000, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027. Which figure your own property clears is something the free home assessment settles. Addresses in Willand, Uffculme, Bradninch and Sampford Peverell go through that visit too.
Book my free home assessmentIt depends on the system size the heat loss survey calls for, the cylinder, and how many radiators need to change, so we won’t put a misleading “from” price on this page. Every Cullompton enquiry starts with a free home assessment and a fixed estimate on the visit, and any grant you qualify for comes off the invoice.
Book my free home assessmentRoughly a week on a typical Cullompton property. We usually start on a Monday and commission on the Thursday or Friday, with the water off in short spells rather than for whole days.
Book my free home assessmentNo, and nothing is owed anywhere in Cullompton for it. Only the room-by-room heat loss survey is chargeable, at £250 plus VAT, and that fee disappears completely if you go ahead with the install.
Book my free home assessmentUsually, yes, if it’s sized from measured heat loss rather than guessed at. Solid stone, cob and timber frame give back heat on a different rhythm from a cavity wall, so the room-by-room heat loss survey carries more weight in Cullompton’s older streets, not less. We measure, then we pick the kit.
Book my free home assessmentNew-build cavity walls usually lose less heat than a Fore Street terrace, which can mean a smaller unit and fewer radiator changes, but we still measure your Cullompton property room by room rather than assume. The heat loss survey tells us that, not the age of the estate.
