Heat pump installation Broadclyst: cob walls decide the design
Cob went into a good part of Broadclyst, often hidden today under a coat of render. Heat pump installation Broadclyst starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey, not a price list, so the system is properly sized for your home and heating requirements.
James and the team provided a first rate end to end service, our old oil boiler failed on Good Friday and within 3/4 weeks we were up and running with a new energy efficient air source heating system. Totally recommend Eco Pro Renewables Ltd to anyone who asks

What your Broadclyst installation includes
The design is the part you are really buying. Get that wrong and no amount of good plumbing rescues it afterwards. A rendered cottage on the main street and a house finished in the last fifteen years get the same treatment, because in both cases the numbers decide the kit. Every Broadclyst installation we quote covers:
- A full room-by-room survey. Every wall, window and room in the property measured on site, not a figure inferred from floor area or your postcode.
- A heat pump sized to that measurement. Big enough for the coldest morning of the year, and no bigger than that.
- A radiator schedule, named individually. Which stay and which need upsizing to perform at the heat pump’s lower flow temperature.
- The heat pump, cylinder, pipework and controls. The air source heat pump itself, a cylinder built for heat pump duty, and all the pipework and controls that go with them.
- Weather-compensating controls. Fitted wherever they earn their keep, reading the outside temperature and moving the flow to suit it.
- Commissioning and optimisation on site. The system leaves us tuned, not sitting on factory defaults.
- A proper handover. We show you how to run it, then servicing when it falls due.
Underfloor heating we design and fit as well. Where a Broadclyst farmhouse already has some downstairs, that is a head start, because low flow temperatures are the conditions it was built for.
Heat pump installation Broadclyst, designed around what your walls are made of
Heat pump installation Broadclyst starts with an awkward question: which Broadclyst? The old village core near Killerton estate is cob and stone under render, some of it the thatched cob you can see at Marker’s Cottage in Townend, and the farms further out run on oil, off the gas grid.
- Cranbrook up the road is a new town whose first houses were occupied in 2012.
- One sizing method cannot serve both, and a quote written without measuring your rooms has simply guessed which of them you live in.
Oil is the other half of it.
- Devon has roughly 41,000 oil-heated households, so the starting point around Broadclyst is usually an ageing oil boiler.
- Our page on swapping an oil boiler for a heat pump in Devon sets out what actually changes.
Eco Pro Renewables works out of Exeter Road in Exmouth.
- We are MCS certified, we specialise in air source alone, air to water, never air to air, and James carries out every free home assessment in person.
- See how we design an air source heat pump installation.
Told your cottage is unsuitable? That verdict is usually a design problem, not a fact about your house.
Why Broadclyst homeowners choose us
Choosing a heat pump installer Broadclyst homeowners can actually get hold of matters more than the badge on the box. We are a heat pump company Broadclyst homeowners deal with directly.
The owner runs your job.
- His training is listed on our about page.
- James does the assessment and design, checks the install team’s work, then commissions and hands over. Aftercare calls go back to its designer, never a salesperson or another department.

Auditing other installers is part of his week.
- NAPIT send James out as a freelance MCS assessor to judge whether somebody else’s installation meets the standard.
- Yours gets designed to survive that same inspection.
Room-by-room heat loss design, not a floor-area guess.
- Oversize the unit and it short-cycles, burning money to no purpose; undersize it and a Broadclyst farmhouse is cold by February.
Older and period properties welcome.
- Cob, stone, thatch, solid walls.
- Being told your cottage cannot take a heat pump is usually a company dodging the design work.
The grant handled and taken off the price, about a week on site.
- Where a property qualifies, we lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application ourselves and subtract it before you are invoiced, never yours to lay out and claim back.
- Two jobs at once is our limit, and Broadclyst is a short drive from Exmouth, well inside the areas we cover.
What homeowners say on Google
Heat pump installation Broadclyst costs, and the grant that comes off first
Being MCS certified, we make the application and subtract the award from your invoice at the outset, so the money never passes through your hands.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs, the honest version.
Set against oil, the gain here is less a dramatic bill cut than a list of things that stop happening: no delivery to schedule, no tank gauge to watch through a wet Devon January.
- We put the comparison in front of you at the survey rather than promise a saving we cannot back.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
Eligible properties not on oil or LPG can qualify for £7,500.
- Eligibility is decided property by property, and your circumstances count as much as the building does.
- An off-gas-grid Broadclyst property, heated today by oil or LPG, can qualify for £9,000 under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, provided the application is lodged by 31 March 2027.
- Full conditions sit on our grant page for off-grid oil and LPG homes.
- Installation carries 0% VAT up to 31 March 2027. The scheme itself runs on beyond that; what expires on 31 March 2027 is the £9,000 off-gas-grid oil and LPG rate.
Why Ideal is often the unit we pick around Broadclyst
For the typical off-grid home the measured heat loss gives the size of unit, and the room figures show which radiators can stay as they are.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
Ideal, matched to a pre-plumbed cylinder, is what we fit most often, and the reasoning is deliberately dull.
Ideal’s 4 to 10 kW band is where the measured heat loss of a Devon cottage or a modest farmhouse usually lands, Ideal builds in the UK so parts turn up, and the cylinder reaches us with its filter, diverter valve and both stats fitted at the factory, which shortens the hours we spend inside your house. That counts for more in an older Broadclyst property, where the airing cupboard is often the only place a cylinder will go and there is no space to improvise. We do not bend a house to fit the kit. If your heat loss or cupboard points to another make, James fits that; we are not tied to one.

A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across East Devon, including Broadclyst, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill and Honiton. Past Killerton, our Silverton heat pump installation page covers the villages to the north. East of here, our Rockbeare page covers a parish where only four addresses in our sample held a gas connection.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Broadclyst: common questions
That turns on the size of the place, the state of the radiators and how the house makes hot water, which is why we open with a free home assessment instead of a price list. Your own heat loss survey produces the number that counts, and in Broadclyst as anywhere else, the price we write down is the price you pay.
Book my free home assessmentUsually yes, if it is designed for the construction rather than around it. Cob and solid stone give heat back on a different rhythm from a modern cavity, so the room-by-room heat loss survey matters more in Broadclyst’s older cottages, not less.
Book my free home assessmentWhere the house is your own, stands off the mains gas grid and burns oil or LPG today, it can qualify for £9,000, so long as the application is lodged by 31 March 2027. Otherwise eligible homes can qualify for £7,500. We establish where your own Broadclyst property stands at the free home assessment.
Book my free home assessmentOften, yes. A farmhouse can need a bigger unit, another heating zone or a different cylinder than a cottage on the main street. We size every Broadclyst property from its own heat loss survey. Nearer Exeter? Our Exeter heat pump installation page may fit better.
Book my free home assessmentRoughly a week. A Monday start is normal, with commissioning on the Thursday or Friday. Two jobs at once is our ceiling, so whoever starts on your Broadclyst property is the one who finishes it.
Book my free home assessmentSometimes. A heat pump works at a gentler flow temperature than an oil boiler, usually in the 45 to 50°C range, so a handful of radiators may have to grow to give out the same heat. Your heat loss survey names them room by room, and anything that changes shows on your fixed Broadclyst quote.
