Heat Pump Installation Bradninch: Gas-Fired Terraces to the Farms Beyond
No side return, nowhere obvious for an outdoor unit: that’s Bradninch’s Fore Street and Hen Street, rebuilt tight to the pavement after the 1666 fire. Heat pump installation in Bradninch starts with measuring your property room by room.

What your Bradninch installation includes, start to finish
A heat pump that lets its owner down almost always got specified without measuring the house properly first. Most of the cost sits in that thinking, not the boxes on the wall. Every Bradninch installation we quote covers:
- The heat loss survey and the design it produces. Wall by wall we record construction, glazing, floor build-up and how each room is actually lived in, so the kilowatt figure fits this house and no other.
- The heat pump and a matched cylinder. Outside goes the heat pump that suits the house; inside, a cylinder built for heat pumps, sized to the bathrooms in actual use rather than whatever the catalogue assumes.
- Radiator changes where the numbers call for them. On a Fore Street terrace that can mean two or three upgraded emitters; on a Hele Road semi, often none. Before a single part is ordered, the schedule lands with you in writing.
- Pipework, electrics and the outdoor base. On a terrace with no side return, routing flow and return from the unit to the cylinder is settled on the survey visit; the electrics normally take a day, and the unit lands on a base fixed by the MCS sound calculation.
- Commissioning and optimisation. We set the flow temperature to the design figure, dial in weather compensation, and agree hot water timing with you instead of shipping the factory settings.
- The grant application. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme paperwork is ours to file, and the money comes off the price before any invoice reaches you.
- Handover and aftercare. Before we leave you get the controls explained in plain English, and the number you ring for the first service is the same one you rang at the start.
Underfloor heating sits inside the same scope too, already down or going in alongside everything else, and it runs happily at the low flow temperatures these systems use.
Air source heat pump installation Bradninch: built tight, split by fuel
Bradninch turns up in the Domesday Book as Bradenese, already old by the time Reginald, Earl of Cornwall, granted the town a borough charter in the twelfth century.
- Paper built what came after: Hele Mill converted from a flour mill in 1762 and was turning out England’s first glazed writing paper within a century, good enough to supply the 1851 Great Exhibition’s catalogues. A version of that mill still runs today, making paper for teabags and sausage casings under new ownership.
- Fire hit the town itself in 1666, destroying much of it, and the terraces built afterward on Fore Street and Hen Street still stand tight against the pavement, party-walled with no room to widen a plot. The Guildhall on Fore Street burned again in 1832; the stone building that replaced it in 1835 still stands.
That history sets the installation problem more than the wall material does.
- A Fore Street terrace often has nowhere obvious to site an outdoor unit without a proper look at access and the MCS sound calculation. Out along Hele Road and Kensham Close the houses are newer, mid-century semis with a garden and a side return, and in town the mains gas network reaches all three streets.
- Out on the farms scattered through the parish it stops, and oil takes over instead, the pattern across rural Mid Devon. For those still on tanks, oil boiler replacement is the usual job: the heat pump takes the load, the deliveries stop. The drive up from Exmouth runs through Exeter and joins the M5, then north to Junction 28 at Cullompton, three miles on from Bradninch.
None of that changes how we work it out.
- Eco Pro Renewables is the MCS-certified air-to-water specialist based on Exeter Road in Exmouth.
- James Stalker has worked on heat pumps since 2010, has past 100 installations behind him, and still does every assessment in person.
Sizing comes from a room-by-room heat loss survey, never a floor-area guess or a photo from the street. See how we design an air source heat pump installation.
Why Bradninch homeowners choose us
A heat pump installer Bradninch homeowners can still reach two winters on beats the lowest number on a quote.
The owner runs your job.
- From first visit to handover it is James on the job: he measures up the house, designs the system, oversees the fit and commissions it.
- He keeps the aftercare, and Bradninch customers phone the person who designed their system rather than a sales department. His background is set out on our about page.
Your designer inspects everybody else’s work.
- NAPIT contracts James as a freelance MCS assessor, judging other companies’ heat pump installations against the standard.
- Oversizing is not a theory to him.
Sizing comes from measurement, not a postcode.
- Nothing gets specified in kilowatts until every room, wall type and window is on paper.
- A terraced house on Hen Street and a farmhouse out past Hele are different engineering problems, and guessing is how short-cycling systems end up in either.
Tight plots and older properties are not turned away.
- No side return, party walls, nowhere obvious to stand a unit: being told a Bradninch property cannot take a heat pump is usually a company avoiding the design work.

- Where a property qualifies, we lodge the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application ourselves and subtract it before you’re invoiced, never yours to claim back.
- Two jobs at once is our ceiling, so whoever starts your Bradninch install is the one who finishes it. The rest of our patch is on the areas we cover page.

Grants and costs for Bradninch homes
As an MCS-certified installer we lodge the grant application ourselves and take the award off your invoice from day one; you never fund it and wait to claim it back. Not every property or household qualifies, and which figure your own Bradninch address can claim is something the free home assessment settles, not a postcode lookup.
Check if your home qualifiesOn running costs we’re straight with you.
We won’t put a percentage or a pound figure on this page, because the honest answer depends on your tariff and what’s being replaced.
- For a household coming off oil on one of the parish’s farms, what changes most is the machinery around the bill: no delivery to schedule, no tank to check before a cold snap.
- More on getting off oil in a Devon property.
Grant figures correct as of August 2026. Eligibility criteria apply and are confirmed at your free home assessment.
-
Bradninch’s town centre runs on mains gas, so an eligible owner-occupier in England or Wales, replacing a fossil fuel system, can typically qualify for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme’s standard £7,500.
- On the farms scattered through the parish, where properties run on oil rather than mains gas, an off-gas-grid Bradninch property burning oil or LPG can instead qualify for the £9,000 heat pump grant, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027.
- Full conditions sit on our off-grid oil and LPG grant page.
- VAT on qualifying installations sits at 0% through to 31 March 2027, and since April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer strictly required to apply.
The kit we fit in Bradninch, and why
Four to ten kilowatts covers the overwhelming majority of what stands between the town centre and the parish boundary.
We choose the cylinder for your home, as we do the heat pump, and it usually arrives pre-plumbed with its valves and stats fitted.
We fit weather-compensating controls where they add value, and set them up at commissioning.
We aren’t bound to a single make the way big installers stuck on one or two are, so the outdoor unit is whatever the property calls for, often an Ideal we know well, paired as a rule with a cylinder plumbed at the factory.
Ideal’s units are made in the UK, which keeps spares quick, and the pre-plumbed cylinder arrives with filter, diverter valve, cylinder stat and overheat cut-out already in place. On a Fore Street terrace, where there is often no more than a metre of side access and the frontage sits inside the conservation area, that pre-plumbed cylinder cuts the hours a fitter needs inside the house, and a compact outdoor unit gives us more options for a spot that still clears the sound calculation and any listed-building check.
Near Hele the constraint flips: plenty of space outside, but often an old airing cupboard that never had a cylinder that size in mind, so the same finished unit still saves a day of first-fix plumbing. None of that is loyalty to a badge. Where a Bradninch property calls for something else, the heat loss survey shows it, and the design follows the building.

Exmouth
A 1930s six-bedroom home with 34 windows
The owners doubted a heat pump could heat an older, larger property. A detailed design running at a low 47 degrees, with seven radiators upgraded and the rest kept, proved it could, comfortably.
West Hill · Ottery St Mary
The job three installers said could not be done
The owners wanted their hot water cylinder relocated to the garage. Three previous companies refused. We redesigned the pipework and did it, on a 311m² home with uninsulated floors.
Newton Abbot
A period home others had written off
We redesigned and re-piped the entire heating system for low-temperature running, and added radiators to rooms that never had them. “Too old” is usually a design problem, not a dead end.
We install across Mid and East Devon, including Bradninch, Exmouth, Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth, Ottery St Mary, Woodbury, Lympstone, Newton Poppleford, West Hill, Honiton and neighbouring Silverton. The parish east of Cullompton spreads its addresses miles apart, which is why air source heat pumps in Kentisbeare are planned one at a time.
Street, Somerset: three installers, three different answers. We designed it correctly.
Before calling us, this homeowner had already had two national installers and another company out, and been handed completely conflicting advice, one proposing an oversized 16kW system, another saying the property was not suitable for a heat pump at all. Our room-by-room heat loss survey showed the home was suitable, but nowhere near the 16kW that had been quoted. We sized it correctly, upgraded only the radiators that genuinely needed it, and fitted an Ideal Logic Air matched to the actual heat loss rather than the quote sheet.
Heat pump installation Bradninch: common questions
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Bradninch’s town centre sits on mains gas, and an eligible owner-occupied home there in England or Wales, replacing a fossil fuel system, typically qualifies for £7,500. Where a Bradninch property is off the gas grid and burns oil or LPG, on one of the farms in the parish for instance, it can instead qualify for £9,000, on any application lodged on or before 31 March 2027. Book my free home assessmentIt depends on the system size, the cylinder, and how many radiators need to change, so we won’t put a misleading “from” price on this page. Every Bradninch enquiry starts with a free home assessment and a fixed estimate on the visit, and any grant you qualify for comes off the invoice.
Book my free home assessmentRoughly a week on a typical Bradninch property. We usually start on a Monday and commission on the Thursday or Friday, water off in short spells rather than for whole days.
Book my free home assessmentNo, and nothing is owed anywhere in Bradninch for it. One stage carries a fee: the room-by-room heat loss survey at £250 plus VAT, and it comes off the invoice in full when you go ahead.
Book my free home assessmentUsually, yes, but it has to be worked out on the visit rather than assumed. A terrace with shared party walls needs its outdoor unit position checked against the MCS sound calculation, and central Bradninch sits partly inside a conservation area with some Fore Street buildings listed, so planning gets checked too before anything else is decided. That’s exactly what the free home assessment is for on a Bradninch terrace.
Book my free home assessmentThey’re a different job to a Fore Street terrace, and often more straightforward for siting the outdoor unit, but the same rule applies: we size from a room-by-room heat loss survey, not from the fact that a property sits outside town. An off-gas-grid Bradninch property burning oil or LPG can also qualify for the higher £9,000 grant, provided the application goes in on or before 31 March 2027.
