Heat pump servicing and repairs across East Devon, whoever installed it
We service and repair air source heat pumps across East Devon and Exeter, including systems we did not install and ones the original company walked away from. Eco Pro is an MCS-certified installation company, and James, the owner, inspects other installers’ work for a living.
James Stalker is the most reliable man I know. He always arrives on time with a smile on his face.
Heat pump problems, and how we fix them
If you already own a heat pump, you have probably had one of these thoughts:
- “My bills are higher than I was told they would be. Is that normal?”
- “Why does it keep switching itself on and off?”
- “The rooms at the end of the run never get properly warm.”
- “The company that fitted it has gone quiet. Who do I call now?”
- “Does it need a service to keep the warranty valid?”
- “Is it meant to be making that noise?”
Fair questions, and each one has a cause we can find. Underperformance usually goes back to how the system was designed, sized or set up in the first place.
- An oversized unit short-cycles, switching on and off instead of running steadily, and wastes electricity.
- Radiators too small for a heat pump’s lower flow temperature leave the far rooms cold.
- Controls left where the original installer set them can make the system work harder than it needs to.
This is exactly what James looks for. As a NAPIT MCS assessor, he inspects other installers’ heat pump work against the MCS standard and knows where corners get cut.
- Whoever fitted your heat pump, we can service it and tell you plainly what it needs.
- An annual service keeps most manufacturer warranties valid, and we keep your records straight.
What a heat pump service includes
A heat pump is a low-maintenance system, but it is not a no-maintenance one. An annual service keeps it running efficiently, catches small issues before they become expensive, and keeps your manufacturer warranty valid.
A standard service is £170 plus VAT and covers the whole system, from the outdoor unit to the cylinder:
- A full system inspection, indoor and outdoor.
- Filters and components cleaned where required, with system pressures checked and corrected.
- The heat pump’s key components checked and tested, with any refrigerant work carried out by our F-Gas certified subcontractor.
- Controls and settings reviewed, so the system is running as efficiently as it should be.
- The hot water cylinder and its performance checked.
- A written report covering any defects and any work we recommend.
We service systems we did not install
This is where a lot of homeowners get stuck.
- The company that fitted your heat pump has gone quiet, moved on, or folded altogether, and now you cannot get anyone to look at it.
- It is one of the most common worries people have about heat pumps in the first place, and it is a fair one.
We are exactly the people to call.
- James spent years keeping a previous company’s customers going with servicing and repairs long after that company had closed, and he has done it ever since.
- On top of that, as a NAPIT MCS assessor, he is paid to inspect other installers’ heat pump work against the MCS standard, so he knows how to work on any installer’s system and spot where corners were cut.
Whoever fitted your heat pump, we service most major air-to-water brands and will tell you honestly what state yours is in. Anything that needs specialist manufacturer support, we assess first. If it turns out to be past saving, we also do MCS heat pump installation across Devon.
Heat pump repairs: what we check first
A heat pump that underheats, locks out or runs up bills you did not expect has a cause you can point at.
- We work through the system in order, then tell you what we found and what it takes to put right.
- We aim to attend breakdowns within 24 hours, and there is no separate call-out fee.
- What a repair costs depends on the job and where you are, so we talk it through when you first get in touch and agree a fair, competitive price before any work starts.
The six checks, in order
Controls and settings.
Flow temperature, weather compensation and timings, which can still sit exactly where the original installer left them.
Filters, pressure and flow.
A clogged filter or a low flow rate starves the system, so it works harder and delivers less heat into the house.
Sizing and short cycling.
A unit too big for the house switches on and off instead of running steadily. We compare the output against the heat loss of the rooms it is heating, which is what a proper heat loss survey measures.
Radiators and pipework.
Radiators that were never sized for a lower flow temperature leave the rooms at the end of the run cold. We measure them against the flow temperature the system actually runs at, the same check behind sizing radiators for a heat pump.
Noise and vibration.
Rattles, hums and a unit working harder than it used to, checked at the mounts, the fan and the defrost cycle. We will also tell you what a heat pump should sound like when it is running properly.
Hot water and the cylinder.
Coil, stat and reheat settings, because a hot water complaint can sit with the cylinder rather than with the heat pump.

Heat pump not performing? Get a second opinion
If your heat pump is not heating the house properly, is costing more to run than you expected, or seems to be switching on and off constantly, the problem is usually the original design or setup, not the technology.
- An oversized system short-cycles and wastes electricity.
- A poorly commissioned one never settles down.
We will take a proper look, tell you what is actually going on in plain English, and give you the options.
- Sometimes it is a setup and commissioning fix.
- Sometimes a radiator or a control change makes the difference.
Either way, you get a straight answer from someone who assesses this exact thing across the industry.
The heat pump is almost silent, which was something we were worried about, and the results have been fantastic. We’re lovely and warm and always have plenty of hot water.
Why an annual service is worth it
Two simple reasons.
- Efficiency, a system that is serviced and set up correctly runs at its best, and on a heat pump that shows up directly in your running costs.
- And protection, most manufacturer warranties require the system to be serviced to stay valid, so a missed service can cost you far more than the service itself if something goes wrong.
We contact you when your annual service is due and arrange a date with you, so there is nothing to remember. Ask us about ongoing servicing when we visit.
Where we cover, and who turns up
Service and repair visits run out of Exmouth and cover East Devon, Exeter, Teignbridge, Mid Devon, Torbay, South Hams and West Devon, plus parts of Somerset and Dorset. Servicing visits in North Devon carry an extra travel charge, agreed with you upfront.
James has worked on heat pumps since 2010, including six years on ground and air source systems at Gecco Heat Pumps, and he has past 100 installations behind him. He also works as a freelance NAPIT MCS assessor, inspecting other installers’ heat pump work against the MCS standard, and he carries out the servicing himself.

Why homeowners choose us to look after their system
Whoever fitted it, your heat pump needs someone who knows it inside out. Here is why people hand theirs to us.
A heat pump specialist, not a general plumber.
- An MCS-certified installation company that works on heat pumps all day, every day, not between boiler jobs.
A NAPIT MCS assessor.
- James inspects other installers’ heat pump work against the MCS standard, so nothing about a heat pump system is unfamiliar.
Local, and here for the long term.
- Based in East Devon and not going anywhere, not a company that will vanish when you need it.
Honest reporting.
- If your system is fine, we will tell you it is fine.
- If something needs attention, you will hear it straight.
A person, not a call centre.
- Straight through to someone who knows the systems, and knows yours.
Common questions
A standard annual service is £170 plus VAT. That covers a full system inspection, checks and testing, cleaning where required, and a written report on any defects or recommended work. Repairs have no separate call-out fee. The price depends on the fault and your location; we go through it with you at first contact and agree it upfront.
Book a serviceOnce a year is the standard recommendation, and it is usually a requirement to keep your manufacturer warranty valid. An annual service keeps the system efficient and catches small issues early.
Book a serviceYes. We service and repair systems we did not install, across most major air-to-water brands, and anything that needs specialist manufacturer support gets assessed first. James has looked after other companies’ customers for years, including after the original installer closed down, and as an MCS assessor he inspects other installers’ work regularly.
Book a serviceYes, and you are not alone in this. It is one of the most common reasons people call us. We will service your existing system, sort any issues, and be here for it going forward.
Book a serviceOften, yes. Underperformance usually comes down to the original design, sizing or commissioning rather than the technology. We will assess it, explain what is going on, and give you the options.
Book a second opinionIn most cases yes. Manufacturer warranties typically require an annual service by a qualified engineer to stay valid. We service to that standard and keep your records straight. If you are not sure what paperwork you should already have, here is what an MCS certificate covers.
Book a serviceBoth. We aim to reach a breakdown within 24 hours and charge no separate call-out fee for the visit; the repair itself is priced on the job and the distance, discussed when you first contact us, and agreed with you before we start. A repair starts the same way as a service, with a proper look at the whole system, because a fault can trace back to the design or the commissioning rather than to a part that has failed.
Book a serviceYes, and it is worth asking for. You get an assessment of the design, the setup and how the system is actually running, plus a straight account of what is right and what is not.
Book a second opinionHeat pumps are the whole of what we do. James has worked as a heat pump engineer since 2010, works under our MCS accreditation, and assesses other installers’ heat pump work for NAPIT. We work on air to water systems, the type that run your radiators and your hot water.
Book a serviceThere is very little to do. Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow and anything stacked against it, leave the heating running rather than switching it off and on like a boiler, and call us if the system pressure drops or an error shows on the controller.
Book a serviceIf you are in East Devon, Exeter, Teignbridge, Mid Devon, Torbay, South Hams or West Devon, yes, and we cover parts of Somerset and Dorset too.
