Owner-led heat pump specialists, built on knowing what good looks like
Eco Pro Renewables is a specialist air source heat pump business based in Exmouth, serving East Devon. Not a general plumbing firm that fits the odd heat pump, and not a national call centre.
Despite parts of the farmhouse being 13th century the system is performing extremely well and keeps the house constantly warm throughout.
Owner-led since 2016
James’s story
From the Army to assessing other installers’ work for NAPIT. The short version, in James’s own words.
When you call, you get James, the owner.
You deal with him directly from the first visit and design through to commissioning, handover and aftercare, and if you need help afterwards you speak to him instead of a salesperson or another department.
Army to apprenticeship
I left the Army in 2010 and retrained in plumbing.
Six years in renewables
In 2011 I joined a renewable energy company, installing both ground-source and air-source systems, and spent six years working alongside one other highly experienced engineer. A small team meant learning every part of the job, on everything from large Grand Designs-style properties to commercial installs. When the company eventually closed, I continued supporting many of its former customers, servicing and repairing their systems long after it had gone.
Eco Pro Renewables founded
I set up Eco Pro Renewables in 2016. Alongside a handful of installs, I kept looking after that company’s former customers, servicing and repairing their systems long after it had gone.
Devon, and the assessor role
Alongside installing and maintaining renewable heating systems, I renovated properties, managed rental homes and moved to Devon to renovate my own house. I also began working as an MCS heat pump assessor for NAPIT, giving me a detailed view of what good and poor heat pump design looks like.
Full-time, for the long term
In September 2025 I committed to Eco Pro Renewables full-time, building it properly for the long term and for my family. That is the business you are dealing with today: focused entirely on air source heat pumps, run by the person doing the work.
More homes, done properly
The focus now: helping more homeowners across the South West switch to efficient, properly designed heating systems, one job at a time.
The NAPIT MCS assessor
The part that sets us apart
James is a NAPIT MCS assessor.
- His job is to visit heat pump installations carried out by other companies and check that they meet the MCS standard, everything from system sizing and pipework to commissioning, documentation and overall compliance.
That is unusual, and it matters to you for one simple reason.
- He sees the good and the bad across the whole industry, week in and week out.
- He knows exactly what a properly designed and installed heat pump should look like, because he is the one assessing whether other people’s work measures up.
- And he applies that same standard to every system Eco Pro installs.
It is also why we can confidently service and fix systems other companies installed, and take on the harder-to-heat homes that others turn away.
What an MCS assessment covers
System sizing and heat loss design
Is the heat pump the right size for the property, based on a real room-by-room heat loss calculation rather than a guess.
Pipework and installation quality
Is the physical work up to standard, from pipe sizing and insulation to how tidily it all goes together.
Commissioning and system setup
Was the system dialled in properly, so it runs efficiently rather than just running.
Documentation and handover
Did the homeowner get the paperwork, certificates and explanations they are entitled to.
Overall MCS compliance
Does the whole job meet the standard that protects your warranty and your grant.
What we do
We are air source heat pump specialists. Air to water only, all day, every day. Not a general plumber who fits the odd heat pump between boiler jobs.
Air source heat pump installation
Full heat loss design, MCS install, grant handled, commissioning and handover. The complete switch from oil or LPG to a properly designed heat pump.
- Room-by-room heat loss design
- MCS install, usually about a week
- Grant paperwork handled for you
- Commissioning and handover
What we stand for
Our confidence comes from experience, honesty, and standing behind every installation long after the work is done.
We do not walk away from difficult jobs.
- We have designed and installed efficient systems on older properties that other firms said could not be done, priced wrong, or lacked the experience to take on.
We do not disappear.
- If something needs putting right, we sort it, even when it costs us.
- We would never leave a customer stuck.
We design, we do not template.
- Every system starts with a full heat loss survey and is built around your actual home.
We are specialists.
- Air source heat pumps are what we do, all day, which is exactly why customers trust us over a generalist.
We are honest.
- Straight answers on suitability, on running costs, and on what your home actually needs.
How it works
We work the same way on every job. It is a design-led process, one or two jobs at a time, and the first step is free.
Free home visit
We come out, look at your property, answer your questions, and tell you honestly whether a heat pump is right for your home.
Your Heat Pump Blueprint
A full room-by-room heat loss survey and a designed system, with a fixed written scope and price. The survey is £250 plus VAT, and that fee is wiped from the final bill when you go ahead with the install.
Installation and commissioning
A clean MCS install, usually about a week start to finish, one or two jobs at a time, with the system properly commissioned and dialled in.
Handover and aftercare
We show you how it runs, and we are here afterwards, with servicing when it is due.
“After comparing several quotes and gathering details I decided to go with Eco Pro after speaking with James and couldn’t be happier. Their design was really detailed, explained clearly and the heat pump works perfectly.”

West Hill, Ottery St Mary: the job three installers said couldn’t be done.
The owners of this large detached home wanted their hot water cylinder moved into the garage to free up space inside. Three previous installers had told them it was not possible, or would be too disruptive to attempt. We redesigned the pipework, relocated the cylinder exactly where they wanted it, and installed a heat pump that comfortably heats a big, hard-to-heat property. They told us we were the only company that gave them the confidence their ideas could actually be done.
